Page 10, West Craven Highlights, December 8,1983 SPORTS By RICHARD D’ELIA Havelock Teams Sweep Pamlico The Havelock Rams, basketball teams faced off with Pamlico High for their first and second games. All three teams a 2-0. In their first meeting, the Varsity Rams won 76-49 in an easy contest. In the second game, Havelock saw a better defense from Pamlico and had a little more trouble. Pamlico fell behind early, but was able to cut Havelock’s lead to 6 with two minutes to play but after the 2 minutes mark the Hurricanes were unable to score and Havelock walked away with a 65- 38 victory. Havelock’s Junior Varsity won their second meeting with Pamlico 61-49 to give them a 2-0 record. A1 McCabe led the assault with 21 points. The Havelock girls had little trouble controlling the Hurricanes. The first games score was 80-32 and the second game was won by the same margin with the score of 68-20. West Craven Wrestlers Shut-Out The first two matches for the West Craven Wrestlers would probably be best forgot. The Eagles have had 2 matches and both have ended 78-0. The first was against Havelock. Havelock had returning this year several wrestlers that went to the state playoffs last year. In this match though in a preliminary, West Craven did see some hope. Curtis White managed a pin shortly after the second period began against Wayne Brazleton. In their second match, there was no preliminary and no hope for West Craven. Taking on West Carteret, the Eagles had no one to go a full 2 periods in their 3 period bouts. Paul Moore lasted the longest for West Craven, he had only a few seconds to go when he was taken by surprise by Nielson Tripp for the pin. West Craven Jayvees 1-1 West Craven’s Jayvee Eagles opened their 1983-84 season with a tough loss to New Bern. West Craven held a slim 12-13 lead going into the second period but New Bern surged ahead by three before half 23-20. The third period ended with the same margins. Jones led 31-28. The fourth quarter proved to be the decider though with Ne\^ Bern out scoring West Craven 20-13, as they preserved a 41-61 victory. In their second game of the week, the Eagles changed the slow pace they had set in the first game. Jumping out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter, the Eagles were able to substitute freely allowing 12 players to score. When the final buzzer sounded, the Eagles had stretched their lead and came away with a 79-48 victory. Jesse Campbell is the Jayvee’s leading scorer averaging 16.6 points per game. James Dixon is the only other Jayvee Eagle in double digits with a 10.0 points per game. Scoring- New Bern vs West Craven New Bern (61) - L. Sconyer 18, R. ’Tripp 14, V. Pugh 12, D. Drew 2, M. West Craven Drops First Two West Craven has had to rebuild this year and so far they look good, but not good enough. \^enever West Craven and New Bern meet all rankings and statistics can be thrown out the door. West Craven would have been favored but the rivalry of these two schools is so great that anything could happen. New Bern crushed the Eagles 68-61 in a very slow paced game. The Eagles in the years passed used the fast-break a lot, but had only one slam-dunk provided by Morris Jones. In this game Derrick Johnson, as anticipated, led the Bears with a game high 22 points. West Craven was led by TimCox with 17 points. In their second game of the week West Craven faced Jones Senior in a fast paced shoot out. At the end of regulation time West Craven saw their 4 point lead dwindle down to a tie. With less than 20 seconds. Coach Lorenzo Jones was hit with a controversial technical foul. Jones Senior then cut the lead to two and received the ball. Tyrone Franks, who had 20 points, drove in for the lay up as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime. With the lead bouncing back and forth throughout the OT play and when the buzzer sounded this time the ball had just left the hands of Dee Dee Brooks who had 6 points. The shot gave Jones Senior a96-96 OT victory, in both the tying shot in regulation time and the winning shot in overtime, Troy Mundine had an assist. He ended the night with 9 assists and 18 points. West Craven Girls Split Two The Girls Eagles of West Craven started their season last week, losing the first and winning the second. On Tuesday they fell to New Bern 66-39. This does not .show how wejl the Eagles played though. At the end of the 3rd quarter New Bern led by only three 30-27. West Craven had held New Bern to three points that quarter. But in the fourth good defense gave New Bern the victory. On Friday Jones Senior visited West Craven and the Eagles avenged their loss of last year at home taking a 46-61 triumph. West Craven do minated the whole game and went into the half ahead 31-16. Jones slowly tried to catch up in the last quarter, but West Craven would not give up much ground and time expired. Kinston Sweeps New Bern After an impressive victory over West Craven, the New Bern Bears found Kinston more than they could handle. Kinston couldn’t secure the victory until there was only about three seconds to go in the game. With the score 48-46 a missed New Bern shot gave Kinston the ball. New Bern decided to fowl, but it didn’t pay off, Travis Freeman sank the front end of a one-and- one to secure the Kinston victory. The Junior Varsity also dropped to 1-1 as Kinston came out on the top of a 58-63 score. In the girls game, defense was the key as Kinston tromped New Bern 39-21. Kimberly Williams led Kinston with 12 points and Dee Wiggins led New Bern with 10 points.
