Page 6, WMt Crawn Highlights, February 9.1984 SPORTS By RICHARD D’ELIA West Craven Drops to 2-4 West Carteret, White Oak, and Havelock all spelled bad news for West Craven as the Eagrles lost to all three teams in Coastal 3-A Conference. West Craven started conference with two wins, but now has lost four games in a row. Against the Patriots of West Carteret, West Craven never got things going and found themselves down 21-8 in the first quarter. Tim Cox scored 19 points in the Eagles’ losing effort, while David Yancy led the Patriots also with 19 points. West Craven traveled to White Oak looking to bounce back from their second conference loss. West Craven led at the half 39-16, but the Vikings would not lie down and die. White Oak cut the lead to 42-32 in the third quarter and with 14 seconds to go in the game had taken a 61-49 lead. The Eagles couldn’t get their final shot to drop and both teams fought for the ball as time ran out. The Eagles have had trouble with their second half intensity in all of their games and Havelock took advantage of this to take control of a close game; winning closely 61-55. Maurice Meyers gave the Eagles a 44-43 lead at the buzzer of the third quarter, but the Rams seemed to remember the final second shot that gave West Craven a victory earlier this season and ran away from the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Havelock is keeping itself in the race with a 3-3 record. New Bern Moves Into Second Place In the Mid-Eastern 4-A conference New Bern has moved into second place at 6-2 behind only undefeated Goldsboro. The Bears had two tough games, but was able to pull off two big victories over Hoggard and Wilmington Laney, The Bears couldn’t put away Hoggard until the final seconds when Jeff Pearsall tapped in a Terrence West alley-oop pass. Derrick Johnson led New Bern with 27 points and Rodney Brown led Hoggard with 16. When New Bern took the court against Laney, they were both tied at 6-2. New Bern, which lost to Laney earlier this season, was able to take revenge and take sole possession of second place. Derrick Johnson also led New Bern’s scoring in this game with 31 points, while Mike Byrd led Laney with 16.
