Walston Beverly Cashon The New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the New Bern-Craven County Board of Education spotlights “Ed ucators of the Month” for March 1984. Mrs. Jacqueline B. Walston, Kindergarten teacher at Bangert Elemen tary School and Mrs. Beverly Cashon, Special Education teacher at Brinson Memorial Thomas Participates In Youth Legfislative Assembly Scott Thomas of Vanceboro was among approximately 300 high school students who participated in the Youth Legislative Assembly held March 16-18 in Raleigh. Scott, son of Senator and Mrs. Joe Thomas, is a senior at West Craven High School. , During the three-day event, the students met to discuss a number of issues including youth rights, health and nutrition, substances abuse, education and juvenile justice. They drew up bills and voted on them, and a final report of their actions will be presented to state leaders. Associate Justice Henry E. Elementary School. Mrs. Walston resides at Cove City, N.C., with her husband and their two children. She received her B. A. Degree from St. Augustine College, Raleigh, N.C., and her Master’s Degree from East Carolina University, Green ville, N.C. She is a member of Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church where she teaches Scott Thomas Frye of the N.C. Supreme Court spoke to the students at the opening session Friday, March 16. Secretary Jane Smith Patterson of the N.C. Department of Admini stration spoke during the Saturday night banquet. The Youth Legislative Assembly was sponsored by the Raleigh Youth Council and by the State Youth Council, a component of the North Carolina Department of Administration’s Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office. Sunday School and is chairperson of Women’s Day Activities. Mrs. Cashon resides at Route 4, Box 106, Riverheights, Morehead City, N.C, with her husband Bob. She received her B.S. Degree in Special Education from Midwestern University and her Master’s Degree in , the area of Communicative Disorders West Craven High Student Qualifies Clif Tyson, a Junior at WCHS and a member of the Marketing/Distributive Education DECA Chapter, qualified in Charlotte as proficiency in General Merchandising. This means that he can be employed in any general merchandising job and be successful with only a minimum of training. Clif had to participate in a written examination and appear before two judges for interviews before he was judged proficient. He was among the 176 students who participated in the event. Only 100 were judged to be proficient. Each of these students was given a certificate and a DECA lapel, pin to show their accomplish- from Johns Hopkins Univer sity. She is a member of Saint Egberts Catholic Church, She enjoys traveling and exploring. In the two years Mrs. Cashon has been at Brinson School she has assisted in setting up a class for severe Learning Disabilities and helped to organize a winter program that includes all exceptional children. There were over 2000 students from MDE programs across the state that were in Charlotte during the weekend competing in competitive events and a place at the National DECA Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo. in May. Mr. Richard L. Cannon, Jr., MDE Coordinator WCHS, accompanied Clif to the State Conference. Friday: Sausage Pizza, Beef McRib on Bun, French Fries, Apple-Raisin Salad, Brussel Sprouts, Gingerbread, Milk/Juice. Seal Off Tooth Decay The state’s chief dental health official. Dr. George G. Dudney, is urging dentists across North Carolina to use plastic dental sealants to protect the chewing surfaces of children’s teeth from decay. Children have an average of nearly 10 decayed, extracted or filled teeth by the time they reach age 16. Studies now show that sealants can reduce this dental decay by 66 percent or more. They are safe, effective, and painless. Dudney pointed out that using these dental sealants now is less expensive than paying later for costly dental work caused by decay. They are expected to last the same length of time as routin'_ (silver) fillings, about seven years.
