Stacy Lee gave the Invocation. During the ceremony, speeches were given to demonstrate the qualities of the National Honor Society. Bridget Sutton spoke on Character; Jill Bland spoke on Scholarship; Sissy Brown spoke on Leadership; and Sherry Register spoke on Service. The new inductees were then sworn into the club by President Cindy Register.The new members are Laura Barlow, Lora Coleman, Asha Davenport, Kelly Evans, Denise Fillingame, Sonya Fulmore, Kristen Gamble, Shelia Hardy, Debbie Hodges, Jim Hodges, Amy Ireland, Jonathan Kelly, Clay McOmber, Michelle Miller, Susan Register, Angela Simmons, and Sandy Wiggins. Principal Robert Jolly gave congratulatory remarks and recognized board members Jimmy Smith, Gray Lancaster, and Butch Wetherington. The meeting was then dismissed by President Cindy Register and refreshments were enjoyed afterwards. From the Office of Congressman Walter Jones “Along with all citizens, I am extremely concerned about the loss of life and property which occurred due to the tornadoes that struck North Carolina, March 28,1984. At the present time there is no way to assess the total damage. Once this damage is determined, the Governor of North Carolina must request the President of the United States to declare the affected area eligible for certain emergency as sistance.” “I have today contacted Mr. Randy Davis, Special Assistant to the President, and asked that if and when the request for emergency assistance reaches the White House, it be expedited. He assured me he would offer every assistance possible.” “I have also today written the President of the United States making the same request, in order that those individuals and muncipalities affected receive assistance at the earliest possible moment.” “Again, my sympathy goes out to all these concerned.” Sixth Annual Pig Cookin’ Contest The Sixth Annual Newport Pig Cookin’ Contest is coming up April 5th, 6th, and 7th. A full slate of family fun begins on Thursday night with a street dance. Friday enjoy the music of “Southern Breeze” as 100 pigs begin cooking. Saturday, April 7th, the fun starts early with a tennis tournament and a lOK Fun-Run followed by a Jazzercise demonstration and music by ^“Southern Style”. The eating’s the best part, and barbecue "dinners will be served starting at 11:30. All the proceeds benefit Newport Community projects. Don’t miss the Newport Pig Cookin’ Contest, April 5th, 6th, and 7th at the Newport Community Park, Newport, N.C. New Registrar At CCC Mr. John Fonville Registration procedures and policies, transcript evaluations and coordinating graduation exercises are just part of the responsibilities of a college registrar and John Fonville, CCC’s new Registrar, is fast learning the demands of the job. Mr. Fonville came to Craven in March and since then has been learning the ins and outs of being a college registrar. Spring registration was one of the first things to which he was indoctrinated. He said that his new job is teaching him to view education with a different perspective. Mr. Fonville is from Craven County and is the son of John and Ethel Fonville. He attended Craven County schools and graduated from Mayor Jimmie Morris presents Farm Life Elementary Principal Richard Bowers with proclamation for School Library Media Week. Proclamation For School Library Media Week WHEREAS, the quest for knowledge by school children in North Carolina is stimulated and developed through the use of educational resources and services provided by school library media programs; and WHEREAS, school library media programs provide accessibility to a wide variety of necessary educational materials such as books, films, records, tapes, instructional television, and computer courseware, as well as the equipment needed for their use; and WHEREAS, school library media programs provide learning activities designed to develop reading and information skills necessary for lifelong learning and pleasure; and WHEREAS, the full potential of school library media programs is dependent upon well-educated professional library media personnel whose varied abilities assist teachers and students in effectively using this wide range of learning resources; and WHEREAS, it is fitting that special recognition be given to school library media programs and the role of school library media personnel in education throughout the state of North Carolina; now THEREFORE, I, Jimmie L. Morris, Mayor of the Town of Vanceboro, do hereby proclaim April 8-April 14, 1984, as SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA WEEK in Vanceboro and encourage all citizens to become aware of the contributions made by school library media programs in our schools. By the Mayor: Jimmie L. Morris West Craven High School in 1976. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 with a degree in industrial relations with a concentration in psychology. He also attended Craven Community College and graduated in May, 1983 with a degree in business administration. While he was a student in Craven, he participated in the “co-op” program and began working at the Social Security Administration Office in 1981 while he attended school. It was from this position that he came to Craven as Registrar. When I asked John what he enjoyed doing in his free time, he said, “I’m a family man and enjoy being with my wife Theresa and two small daughters, Hermione, age 5, and Niya, sixjmonths.” He also enjoys reading and all sports.
