She is the State 4-H Project winner in Automotive. She is the daughter of Mr. and ^^Mrs. William D. Gaskins, Jr. During her 10 years in 4-H, she has participated in Automotive, Electric, Agriculture, Foods, Horticulture, and Dog Care projects. She has conducted a workshop on Auto management, and competed in district and state auto skill driving contests. Honors and recognition earned by Miss Gaskins are State Automotive Project runner-up in 1983, District Auto Skill Driving Champion in 1984. She received an Auto Skill Driving trophy and Scholarship to NC 4-H Congress. Her leadership abilities include holding a district office, 2 county offices and attended numerous state and district meetings and retreats. She attends Antioch F.W.B. Church. While in High School she was Graduation Marshall and participated in the Band and the Basketball team. She now attends North Carolina State University. Because of this outstanding accomplishment, Ms. Gaskins will receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Illinois, Craven County 4-H Club is very proud of Beverly and we would like to say Congratulations on a job well done. Get out your dancing shoes—-or at least, your walking shoes—for the big celebration on Saturday, April 28! Spring Arts ’84 is New Bern’s Annual all day, free-of- charge festival of the arts on »'.^^Iain Street (Middle Street) in ^^Historic Downtown, New Bern. The day’s events ^ill include the judged art show at the Belk Building, sales and demon strations of art and crafts on the street and sidewalk, a special exhibit at The Bank of' the Arts, a church and club bazaar, and a children’s Create-in in Bear Plaza, and live entertainment through out the day. Plans are also underway for a spectacular puppet show and the public premier showing of a locally- ^^ilmed drama on the history of i'j^Vepsi-Cola! Many dedicated volunteers of the Craven Arts Council and Gallery, the New Bern Recreation Department, the Craven County Recreation Department, and the Art Study Division of the New Bern Woman’s Club have been working on these preliminary plans. Additional volunteer input will be needed on the actual day of the festival, from early morning until late evening. Spring Arts ’84 will literally involve hundreds of people. It is truly a community affair. The most important aspect of Spring Arts is the enjoyable exposure of Eastern North Carolina to a variety of the arts-music, dance, drama, crafts, and the visual arts. It provides artists and craftsmen an opportunity to display and sell their wares,” states Leah Wiggins. “Also, the festival helps to promote the revitalization in New Bern’s Downtowr West Craven FBLA Wins Top Awards Twenty members of the West Craven High School Future Business Leaders of America attended the 30th Annual State Leadership Conference in Charlotte on March 29 - April 1,1984. The club received a Gold Seal Award of Merit for their activities this school year. Lee Kirkman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Obie Kirkman, Cove City, took first place in public speaking and Chris Lawhorn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Lawhorn, Rt. 5, New Bern, placed first in Word Processing/Machine Transcription. Susan Register, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Register, Cove City, won third place in the Clerk-Typist II competition. Chris Lawhorn and Margaret Barnhill were among the finalists for the James L. White Scholarship and the Burlington Industries Foundation Scholarship. Chris Haithcock and Diana Ipock were one of the top five teams in Entrepreneurship 11. Other club members attending were Jo Carol Arthur, club president: Betty Blow, Kirk Daniel, Tracey Davis, Paula Gaskins, Alicia French, Jill Bland, Leslie Manning, Denise Parks, Melissa Sutton, Scott Thomas, Lisa Wetherington, Lora Elliott, and Leshia Wright. They were accompanied by their advisors, Mrs. Shirley Eriksson, Mrs. Colleen Harris, and Miss Rhonda Cotten. In July the first place winners are planning to attend the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia where they will compete and represent North Carolina. Joe Thomas Honored State Senator Joe Thomas, who is also Senior Vice President for Weyerhaeuser Company’s Real Estate Subsidiary Westminister Company at Jacksonville, has been selected as the legislator of the year for 1984 by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation.
