That dream came true for Lee Kirkman on Friday as he was named President of the 14.000 member North Carolina Association of the Future Farmers of America. The announcement was made in Raleigh before an audience of approximately 1100 FFA members at the close of the 56th state FFA Convention. Kirkman, a 1984 graduate of West Craven High School, set his goals as a sophomore and worked diligently throughout the remainder of his high school days, taking advantage of every opportunity to improve himself and advance in the FFA. He is the first graduate from West Craven to receive the honor of state officer. Kirkman, along with five state FFA Vice-Presidents will travel extensively during the school year conducting and assisting with FFA activities at the chapter, federation, district, state, and national levels. State FFA officers are available to all FFA chapters state association for inspirational addresses for classes or banquets, and they conduct leadership schools for chapter officers in each of the eight North Carolina Educational Districts. As president, Kirkman will serve on the N.C. FFA Board of Directors during the 1984-85 school year and again during 1985- 86 as past-president. The 1984-85 state officer team will be responsible for planning and conducting the 57th Annual State Convention to be held in June, 1985. Kirkman will participate in the State Leadership Conference at White Lake, N.C., July 2-6, the National Leadership Conference for State Officers at Cherrygrove, S.C.. July 10-12, the National State Presidents Conference at Washington, D.C., July 22-28, the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Conference at Charlotte, N.C., August 6-9, Ag Ed Day at NC State University at Raleigh, ' September 8, and the National FFA Convention at Kansas City, Missouri, November 6-11,1984. As a FFA member, Kirkman served the West Craven Chapter as Vice-President during 1982-83 and 1983-84 school years. He was a member of the chapter parliamentary procedure team and represented the chapter in public speaking contests in 1982-83 and 1983-84. Encore of Annie” Lee Kirkman and was selected as the Most Outstanding FFA member at West Craven during his junior and senior years. In addition to his chapter responsibilities, Kirkman served as the Seashore Federation FFA Vice-President during both junior and senior years and served District II as Treasurer during 1982-83 and as President during 1983-84. While at West Craven, Kirkman was also a member of the Bus Drivers Club, the National Honor Society, and the FBLA. As a senior, he was voted “hardest worker” by his classmates and received the Outstanding Senior Service Award. Kirkman was recently named state winner in the state FBLA public speaking contest in Charlotte. Kirkman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Obie L. Kirkman of the Jasper Community. He attends the Asbury Methodist Church where he is a member of the MYF, the church choir, and serves as the church pianist. He will attend N.C. State University beginning in the fall where he will major in crop production. The New Bern Civic Theatre will present two hold over performances of their hit show “Annie” on Thursday and Friday - June 21 and 22 at 8:15 p.m. at Saax Bradbury Playhouse Downtown, New Bern. Soda Shop Robbed During the afternoon last Monday, three men entered Pat's Soda Shop and asked to see the watches. While Ms. Daisy Powell was showing the watches to two of the men, the third man took an undeter mined amount of money from the cash register. When Ms. Powell asked him what he was doing he replied, “I just put some trash in the trash can.” The local police was notified and an all points bulletin was broadcast for the three men, but no arrests have been made. This is the time of year for problems to arise in the market place. Merchants and employees are asked to be alert to strangers. Try to remember some description, such as scars, type of car, license number, if possible, and direction of travel. It is the policy of most businesses not to resist the robber. The law enforcement agencies will have a better chance of apprehending them, if they have a description.
