Pendergraft Speaker For D.H. Conley Athletic Banquet West Craven Highlights, June 28,1984, Page 7 KATHY DUNN The annual athletic banquet was held on May 17 to honor D.H. Conley’s athletes. Guest speaker for the occasion was Mr. David Pendergraft assistant basketball coach at East Carolina University. To open the evening, Coach Chuck Dunn delivered the invocation followed by the welcome from Coach Shelly Marsh, athletic director at Conley. Mrs. Joy Riddick introduced the guest speaker, Mr. David Pendergraft. Mr. Pendergraft sp^||[||on being a winner for par^^ating in athletic events. The presentation of the awards followed Mr. Pender- graft’s address. Mrs. Lillian Outterbridge opened the ceremony by presenting the cheerleading awards which were as follows: Most Improved, Michelle Halby; Outstanding Cheerleader, Suzy Lindsey: Most Valuable, Kathy Springer; and Most Spirited, Lucretia West. Matmaid awards were given out by Mrs. Rose Marie Sherman. Award winners were Sherry Hardy, Most Vaiuable and Christy Riggs, Most Spirited. Coach Martha McCaskill awarded the following volleyball players; Most Valuable, Karen Barrett; Outstanding Rookie, Trellaney Boyd: Most Improved, Pattie Keeter; and Most Dedicated, Debbie Patrick. Following the volleyball awards. Coach Alan Wilson presented the football awards. The recipients were as follows; Most Improved , Kenny Dixon; Most Valuable, Stacy McCart er: and Coach’s Awards, John Brown, David Daniels, and Chris Via. Chester Paramore received the Most Valuable in cross country frmo Coach Chuck Dunn. The next awards were presented by Coach Joy Riddick to the following girls in basketball; Most Valuable, awards Coach named Offen- Bryant; Mechio Kornegay; Best Defensive Player, Debbie Ptrick; and Coach’s Award, Karen Barrett. Boys’ basketball were presented by Shelly Marsh. Those include. Outstanding sive Player, Louis Outstanding Defensive Player, Darryl Daniels; Most Dedi cated, Randy Holloman; and Most Valuable, Donald Wilson. The following received wrestling awards from Coach Milt Sherman; Most Improved, Kerry Farris; Outstanding Senior, Shawn Hardy: Most Dedicated, Gerald Harper; Outstanding Wrestler, Stacy McCarter; and Coach’s Award, Ricky Rice. Coach Chuck Dunn pres ented the following awards in boys’ track; Most Improved, Anthony Dudley; Outstanding Rookie, Carl Dunn; Outstand ing in Field events, Sewell Mills; Most Valuable , Gary Nobles; Outstanding in Track events, Bartt Richards; and Outstanding in Relay events, Curtis Tucker. To close the awards ceremony. Coach Emmett Koonce presented the following awards in softball: Best Defensive Player, Michele Waters: Best Offensive Player, Karen Barrett; Most Spirited, Lisa Mills; and Most Valuable, Karen Barrett. Girls’ track awards were not presented since six team members were competing in the Regional Track Meet on May 18. Competing in the state playoffs delayed the presenta tions of the boys’ baseball awards. An appearance by Keith Gatlin, who aided Coach Marsh in presenting the basketball awards, was an added feature to the evening. The closing remarks were performed by Mr. Jack Jackson, President of the Viking Club. The benediction was given by Coach Dunn. Conley Presents Year End Awards The sixteen departments at D.H. Conley recently presented departmental awards to outstanding students for the school year 1983-84. Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Nelson Lee of Ernul, North Carolina and a graduate of West Craven High School at Vanceboro, has been awarded a Pulp and Paper Foundation Sc.^l||rship. He will enter the scl^9 of Pulp and Paper Science and Technology at North Carolina State Univer sity in Raleigh in the fall term. The Pulp and Paper Foundation has awarded 76 academic scholarships with a total value of $117,500 for study in the Pulp and Paper field at NCSU in the 1984-85 school year. Mr. Lee is an employee in the pulp department at Weyer haeuser Company’s pulp mill at New Bern. Pete Rose of the Phillies is the only switch-hitter among the 15 major leaguers who have 3,000 or more hits in their career. Color television was first demonstrated in 1925. Hunt Met With Business, Education and Government Leaders Gov. Jim Hunt met with business, education and government leaders on June 25 to discuss recommenda tions from the final report of the N.C. Assembly on Women and the Economy. The meeting took place at 11 a.m. on June 25 In the Old House Chambers in the State Capitol. About 75 representa tives from private industry, education and local govern ment were expected to attend the meeting. "At the Governor’s Con ference on Women and the Economy, I promised to discuss these important recommendations with our state’s leaders,’’ Hunt said. “I look forward to meeting and talking about the kinds of things we can do to improve the relationship of women and their families to the economy." The final report on women and the economy was presented to the governor in May. - It contains more than 100 recommendations from the N.C. Assembly on Women and the Economy, a group of 150 North Carolina women and men who studied the issues. The recommendations were presented to and refined by participants of the Governor’s Conference on Women and the Economy, held last fall. “I am proud of what we have done in this state to improve our economy,” Hunt said. “These recommendations, if implemented, will make our economy even more success ful and will benefit all citizens of our state.” Summer Programs YMCA The New Bern - Craven County YMCA is still conducting registration for various summer programs. Programs being offered during the summer are: Summer Day Damp for 6-12 yrs of age. Kinder Camp for 3-5 yrs. of age. Computer Fun and Games for 3-5 yrs. of age and swim iessons for 3 mos. to adults will be conducted all summer. Also, the YMCA’s CAM II Weight Equipment will be on line by mid July.
