West Craven Highlights, December 20, 1984 Historically Speaking By JANIS CANNON ^ Papermaker Opens Studio Betty Harris, the visiting artist from Craven Community Coliege, has opened a studio at the YMCA. Every Wednesday afternoon between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Betty will be making paper using the ancient Chinese techniques. She invites the public to visit at that time. Betty exhibited her "Musical Instruments” series at a one- woman show at the Bank of the Arts in May. Joanne Poole and Leslie John Lee in the Sun Journal review of Betty's exhibition (Tuesday, May 15, 1984) refer to her work as “paper constructed sculp tures." Her art form is unique in that she combines her handmade paper with other natural fibers—kudzu, grape- vine and bamboo—to create fans, music instruments and other familiar objects. Betty will be happy to conduct papermaking demon strations and workshops for schools and clubs free of charge. Call her studic 638 1271. Please show your support for the Community College visiting artist progran^y stopping by Betty's Yl||fe studio. She would r^y appreciate it. Have plenty of food available (not just peanuts and pretzels) to emphasize that drinking is not the sole reason for the party, and also because alcohol is absorbed less rapidly if food is eaten. Foods high in protein and fat do the best job of retarding the effects of alcohol. 5. Plan to close the bar about an hour before the party is over, and do so without an announcement, which will cause a rush of fast drinking. Quietly switch to coffee and soft drinks, with food still available. 6. Responsible hosts will plan for' such eventualities. (However, don't announce the availability of these arrangements as that may encourage some to over imbibe.) Col. Guy also advises responsible driver's to report drinking drivers to the nearest law enforcement agency. “You will be doing yourself, your neighbors, the entire com munity, and the drinking driver himself a big favor by helping to get him off the road,” he says. The holiday season is a time of bright lights, extra cooking and family gatherings. It's also a time of increased use of electricity in many homes. Carolina Power & Light Co. offers some basic electrical safety tips that can help make this a safe holiday season: —Turn off Christmas lights before leaving home or going to bed. —Make sure Christmas lights have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) approval. —Don't overload electric circuits by attaching more than three strings of lights to one extension cord. —Check all strings of lights for broken or cracked sockets. -Don’t let lights come in contact with any flammable material. —Place your tree, light strands and extension cords where they won’t be knocked over or walked on.
