9f i ^pohs 1 Noting The Carolina Tar Heels CHAPEL HILL, NC—North Carolina’s basketball team will have an unusual treat during the upcoming hoiidays—two Christmas Days in the same year. The Tar Heeis, 5-0 after last Saturday night’s 79-73 victory at Wake Forest, are off to Japan this week for games against Wichita State and Arizona State in the Suntory Ball. Those games are scheduled for Dec. 21 and 23 in Osaka and Tokyo. After spending Christmas Day in Tokyo, the Carolina team wili thea leave Japan at 10 p.m. for Honolulu. The Tar Heels will arive flwwaii at 9 a.m.—on Christmas Day! The time change thus g^s Carolina two Christmases. in Honolulu, the Tar Heels will face Hawaii Pacific in the Hawaii Pacific Invitational Tournament with Arizona and Missouri piaying in the other opening-round game. THE SUNTORY MATCHUPS Carolina wiii play Wichita State and Arizona State in the Suntory Baii in Japan this week. The Tar Heels will face the Shockers at Osaka’s Jo Hall at 7 p.m. Friday. That’s 5 a.m. in North Caroiina. Then on Sunday, it’s Caroiina versus Arizona State at Aoyama University Hail in Tokyo. That game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., which wouid be 10:30 p.m. on Saturday back in Chapel Hill. Despite the 14-hour time difference both games wiii be broadcast iive on the Tar Heel Sports Network. ■ • • ? I West Criiven Wichita State, a pre-season Top 30 team, features 6-8 forward Xavier McDaniel. McDaniel led the nation in rebounding as a sophomore two years ago with a 14.4 average. He was third nationally last season with a 13.1 mark and also averaged 20.6 points a game. Arizona State finished fifth in the Pac-10 last year and returns three fine sophomore guards from that team. The Sun Deviis have aiso been helped by the addition of six newcomers, including 6-10 junior coiiege transfer Jon Tayior and 6-7 freshman Chris Sandie. BACK TO HONOLULU When North Caroiina takes part in the Hawaii Pacific Invitationai iater this month at Honoluiu, the Tar Heels will be making their fourth appearance in Hawaii since 1972. On their earliertripsCarolina won the Rainbow Classic in 1972 1977 and 1982. MICHAEL AND SAM WERE THE BEST Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins, University of North Carolina All-Americas last year, have been named Sportsmen of the Year by ABAUSA, the governing body of amateur basketball in the United States. Jordan and Perkins were co-captains of last summer’s U.S. Olympic Team which swept the Goid Medal in Los Angeles. Jordan was twice Nationai Piayer of the Year in his three years at Caroiina. After getting advice from Tar Heel Coach Dean Smith, he gave up his finai year of eligibiiity and is now one of the biggest stars in the NBA. Perkins was a three-time first-team All America at Carolina. He is the leading rebounder and second-ieading scorer in schooi history. The announcement of their seiection was made by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Cheryl Miller of Southern California was named Sportswoman of the Year in Basketbaii. Jones, a defensive tackle was known for his brute power. This 6-6 junior is a member of the Coastal 3-A All Conference Team and also added to the making of West Craven High’s history making 10-0 con ference season under Coach Clay Jordan and his staff. Honorable mention went to nose guard Terrell Hardy of West Craven. Hardy as on the Coastal 3-A All Conference Team and was instrumental in getting West Craven a 10-0 conference season.
