PAGE 4 — WEST CRAVEN HIGHLIGHTS — JULY 13, 1989 f - ■ » r- t •* ' ’>40' '.■ Photos by Lee Schweitzer Jr. A penalty if the ball gets wet — and your shoes too. Up the hill and in the hole — maybe. Forget the drivers, woods and irons. AH you need is a putter and golf ball. Every summer the “links of carpet” get a workout as vet eran and beginning “duffers” head to beaches, campgrounds and other area where minia ture golf courses can be found. Call it “goofy”, “crazy” or mini ature golf, duffers who play the game with a serious air are akin to their country club counterparts. The courses are often crowded and one usually has to wait for a tee time. There are no golf carts. One must lug their putter from hole to hole. There is some form of golf eti quette. You don’t nudge the ball with your foot, you don’t smack the ball into the next “fairway” and you never skip a hole because it is “unfair.” You can wear the most obnoxious clothing you have. In fact, at many courses it seems to be a requirement. Trying to putt while a pair of lime, orange and purple shorts walks by can be a problem. And you can always spot the golfers from New Jersey. They wear black socks with their sandals and their Bermuda shorts aren’t all that short. The layouts are as tough as any PGA course. And whoever heard of dragons, snakes, windmills and other strange hazards in the middle of a PGA fairway? But on any decent mi niature golf course there are hazards a plenty. The newest course in the area is at Yogi Bear’s Camp ground just north of Bridgeton on U.S. 17. Staff photographer Lee Schweitzer Jr., son An drew and Donovan Lee gave the course a workout recently. Nobody said what their score was, but who cares. Miniature golf is supposed to be fun and who wants to learn math by keeping an accurate scorecard. Fore! Sign the card or the score won’t count. r-r,.
