October, 1988 The Belles Page 3 Meet Dean Hack By Carlyle Herbert This year at Saint Mary’s there are many new additions, one of which is our new Dean of Students, Mardi Hack. By now you all undoubtedly know who she is but you do not know much about her. Some of her new policies are upsetting people, yet once you get to know her you see Miss Hack is not simply a “mean dean,” as she has dub bed herself. Surprisingly enough Miss Hack has many of the same interests as Saint Mary’s students. She enjoys playing tennis, paint ing, taking pictures, spending time with chil dren, listening to music, dancing and going to the beach. She describes herself as assertive, con fident and happy in the job she has chosen for herself. Her enthusiasm is strong and it is spilling over into the student body. Miss Hack said she has numerous goals for the year and she named the three that she feels are the most important. First, she wants to keep the school at the enthusiastic pace it is at now. She also expressed her hope that Saint Mary’s students will develop a new respect and confidence in themselves through her as a model. Finally, she hopes that the Activities program will get better and better. So the next time you see Miss Hack around campus, remember all the things you may have in common with her and say hello. The school as a whole will be very lucky if her goals are achieved, and with her determination it is doubtful that they will not be. Our new Dean of Students, Mardi Hack, is ready to greet students in her office. i Dear El lie Dear Ellie, I am 18 years old and have been smoking 3 pack of cigarettes a week for two years, ^hat are the effects of smoking this much 3nd what will happen in the future? Signed, Unsure Saint Mary’s College Dear Unsure, This is a very simple, but frequently asked question. According to YM magazine, yes, waterproof mascara can be damaging to your eyes. Waterproof mascara is designed to resist smearing and running as a result of contact with water. These mascaras do not smear but sometimes flake. These flakes of mas cara can get into the eye, irritating and sometimes damaging the cornea. Wearers of contact lenses may also find problems with using waterproof mascara. Pieces of mascara that get into the eye may irritate the contact. This can be painful to you and damaging to the contact.
