Ivey & Company presented to Belmont Abbey College a limited edition Russian book offering the first complete collection of water- colors by Maria Sibylia Merian. Miss Ivey Jackson, book buyer for the Ivey stores, presented the book, along with Ervin Jackson, Jr., senior vici president of Ivey’s and Mrs. Alla Ostrovsky, a native Russian who is associated with Ivey’s as a professional artist. In presenting the book, Miss Jackson explained, “Even before Father Bradley (provost of Belmont Abbey College) came to Belmont, he was well known in world publishing as a renowned editor. We are giving this special book in his honor for his contribution to publishing worldwide.” The collection consists of two parts. A cassette contains 50 facsimile of water-colors that, in their faithfulness to the originals, reveal the whole beauty of the originals. Bradley. poses unknown. Twelve are designs for engravings not normally ascribed to Maria Sibylia Miriam. They are supplemented by 16 watercolors which served as originals for engravings, 8 of European, and 8 of Surinam, plants and in sects. Published in Russia with an English text translation, the Ivey gift will hold interest for students and scholars in both art history and natural history. The world edition of this book was limited to 1800 copies, the Ivey gift being number 331. It is not known precisely how many copies of this limited work are located in the hands of libraries and collectors in the United States; but, it is believed to be less than 500. Theological Seminar Held At BAG The Ninth Annual Hallinan Theological Seminar was held June 12-15 at Belmont Abbey College. “The Christian in Tension” was the theme of the seminar for those involved in pastoral and educational ministries. Speakers at the seminar were Dr. Emily Binns, associate professor of theology at Villanova University, “The Christian in Tension” and “The Church in Tension’’; Rev. James T. Burtchaell, C.S.C., professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, “Christian Vision of Human Sexuality” and “Prayer and Christian Sexuality”; Rev. Matthew Fox, O.P., chair person of the religious studies deoartment and associate professors of religion at Barot College, Lake Forest, 111., “Stages of Consciousness - Stages of Prayer” and “Christian Prayer in American Culture”; Rev. Msgr. George G. Higgins, secretary for research for the U.S. Catholic Conference, “Foundations of Prayer and Justice” and “Social Justice in the Local Church”; and Rev. Gerald S. Sloyan, professor of religion at Temple University, “Why Liturgy in a World Tom Apart” and “Liturgy and Justice as Basic Elements of the Church.” Approximately 120 persons attended the four-day seminar, headed by Father Jerome Dollard, O.S.B., chairman of the theology department of Belmont Abbey College. Chamber Honors Fr. Bradley Father John P. Bradley was honored at an Appreciation Dinner sponsored by the Civic Affairs Committee of the Belmont Chamber of Com merce on May 4. The dinner, held at the Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, honored Father Bradley on the occasion of his resignation from the presidency of Belmont Abbey College, effective May 31, 1978. Father Bradley has served the College and the community in this capacity for the past eight years. Speakers paying special tribute to Father Bradley at the dinner included Abbot Jude Cleary, O.S.B., chancellor of Belmont Abbey College; Dr. Bonnie Cone, vice chancellor emeritus of UNC-Charlotte; Paul J. Ford, vice president and trust officer of the Bank of Belmont; and James G. Babb, Jr., .'ice president of Jefferson- Pilot Broadcasting Company. Ronald Smith, president of the Belmont Chamber of Commerce, presented Father Bradley a plaque in recognition of service he has rendered “to the College and the community as educator, administrator and civic leader.” Herndl Named Acting Dean I'r. George Herndl, chairman of the English department at Belmont Abbey College, has been appointed interim academic dean of the College by Father Neil Tobin, college president. Herndl replaces Father James Solari, O.S.B., who resigned from the position, effective May 31, 1978. Herndl will hold that position through July 31, and will be responsible for all matters normally han dled by the academic dean. The College expects to have a permanent rq)lacement for Fr. James by this date. Fr. James is leaving Belmont Abbey College to begin work on organizing a church in Clem mons, N.C. CROSSROADS VOLUME Vi NUMBER SIX JUNE, 1978 Contributions: John P. Collins Two Belmont Abbey College recruiters have been named assistant directors of ad missions. J.P. Collins, an Abbey alumnus, has been a full-time recruiter for the College for the past six years, longer than anyone else in College history. He is responsible for the recruitment rf students in the New York, New Jersey, Penn sylvania and Connecticut areas. As a Belmont Abbey College student, Collins was actively involved in extra-curricular activities. As a member and vice president of Phi Kappa Theta national social fraternity, he was named to the National Fraternity Hall of Fame. He was a member of the College intercollegiate baseball team and served as a sports an nouncer on the Abbey radio station. Collins graduated from the College in the field of economics and business in 1972 and was listed in that year’s edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He and his wife Vicky currently live in Toms River, N.J. Robin R. Roberts, also named assistant director of ad missions, will begin his third year of recruiting for the College this fall. Roberts, a ‘76 alumnus of the Abbey, recruits Robin Roberts m the Florida, Virginia, D.C., Maryland and Tennessee areas. He received his Abbey degree in political science and is currently enrolled part-time as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As a student at the Abbey, Roberts was active in student government. He was president of the Student Association as a senior and treasurer of the organization during his junior year. He was also a member and treasurer of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and business manager for the student newspaper and yearbook. Roberts was listed in the 1975- 76 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He was also selected for the Lyndon Baines Johnson legislative internship with Representative Charlie E. Bennett of his home district, the third congressional district of Florida. The Belmont Abbey College admissions office is under the direction of Harry P. Creemers, a 1974 graduate of the College. The office has one other recruiter, Jane Shannon, a ‘77 alumna, who is responsible for recruiting in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. She will begin her second year of recruiting this fall. Fr. Francis Named Data Processing Director Father Francis Forster, O.S.B., registrar at Belmont Abbey College since 1970, has resigned from that position to serve as director of data processing at the College. Father Francis has been employed by the College since 1962 as an instructor in reading and German (1962-64), an in structor in philosophy (1965-68), and director of institutional research and instructor in philosophy (1968-70). A native of Willard, Ohio, Father Francis entered the Belmont Abbey Monastery in 1957 and made his solemn profession of vows as a monk of the Order of Saint Benedict one year later. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1964 in the Abbey Church. A 1960 graduate of Belmont Abbey C(dlege in the field of philosophy. Father Francis also holds the S.T.B. degree in theology (1964) from Belmont Abbey Seminary. As director of data processing. Father Francis will be responsible for maintaining and updating the approximately 100 data and {xt)gram files Belmont Abbey (College has in conjunction with Wrenn Brothers Carolina, Inc., Charlotte. In addition he will be writing new computer programs for the various College offices as the need arises.
