FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1957 THE BARKER The Homecoming \^Tieel Of Fortune . PAGE THREE WHS Names Make The News Sponsors for 33 clubs will appear in tonight’s Homecoming at Memorial Stadium. The sponsors are shown above Attendants, Escorts Ready For Homecoming Sponsors of 33 clubs have been elected and will attend the queen at the homecoming halftime ceremonies tonight at Memorial Stadium. Judy Roberson was chosen by the Spanish Club as sponsor during Homecoming. Judy, a member of the Booster’s Club, will have J. L. Wag oner as her escort. Brenda Kizziah will represent the Safety Council during Homecoming. In addition to being a member of the Safety Council, she is also a member of the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y, the Bible Club, and the Booster’s Club. Her escort will be Roland Hodge. The Key Club chose Ella Ray Whedbee as its sponsor. Extra-curricu lar activities of Ella Ray’s sophomore year include being a member of the Keyette and Booster’s Clubs. She will be escorted by Bill Bray. A member of the Keyettes, Betty Finley will represent this club at Homecoming. She is also a member of the debating team, the Scribbler’s Club, the National Honor Society, and Advertising Manager of the an nual. She will be attended by Mike Avenl. Sandra Schiffley, Associate Editor of The Barker, will sponsor The Barker staff at the homecoming fes tivities. Some of her activities include being a member of the F. T. A., the National Honor Society, the Scrib bler’s Club, and the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y. Sandra will be escorted by Malcolm Kilpatrick. The homecoming sponsor for the Jr. Civitan Club is Linda Heath. She is art editor of the annual, secretary of her homeroom, and a member of the F.T.A. .lobnny Dunlap is her es cort. Janice Holt, president of the Civ- inettes, will represent her club during the homecoming activities. Janice is also a member of the Booster’s Club and Photography Editor of the an nual. She selected Jiile Terrell as her escort. The annual staff’s sponsor for homecoming is Judy Wright. She is a member of the Civinettes, the Na tional Honor Society, the Student Council, and also editor of the an nual. Tommy Neal is her escort. Alternate cheerleader Joanne Moff will represent the varsity .squad at the homecoming activities. Joanne is also a member of the Spanish Club, Speech Club, Dramatic Club and the Teen Age Club Council. She will be escorted by Lin Puckett. Jan Sutton, National Honor Society sponsor, is a member of the Sr. Tri- Hi-Y, the French Club, the National Honor Society, and is a Red Cross repre.sentative. Jan chose Phil Know les as her escort. The Jr. Exchange Club chose Bren da Hay as its sponsor. This year Brenda is a member of the Civinettes, the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y, and the Safety Council. She is State Secretary of the Jr. Civitan Club. Tommy Truitt is her escort. The sponsor for the Bible Club, Jennie Faye Minnis, will be escorted by Fred Shull. Jennie Faye belongs to the French, Speech, and Debating Clubs. She is also a member of the F. T. A. Nancy Carr will serve as sponsor for the Scribbler’s Club. Among her activities are memberships in the Key ettes, the Scribbler’s Club, and the National Honor Society. She also holds the position of Assistant Busi ness Manager of the annual. Nancy will be escorted by Dean Coleman. The Library Club will be repre sented by Wanda Bridges during Homecoming. Wanda is a member of the Library Club, the Bible Club, and the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y. She will be escorted by Bill Steele. Becky Jones, who is the Band spon sor, will be escorted by Don Jenkins, Her activities include memberships in the Civinettes, F. T. A. and the National Honor Society. The Monogram Club has chosen Faye Jones as its representative dur ing Homecoming. Faye, who is in the Booster’s Club, will be escorted by Alan Long. Glee Club spqns«pr Patricia New ton is in the Keyettes, Mixed Chor us, and the Scribbler’s Club. She will be escorted by Butch Wooten. Escorted by Marce Pearson, Betty Tickle will represent the Jr. Tri-Hi-Y at Homecoming. Betty is a homeroom president and member of the Boost er’s Club. She is also the school or ganist. The Sophomore Tri-Hi-Y elected Loretta Morris as its sponsor. She is president of her homeroom and a member of the Booster’s Club. Kathy Clark is sponsor for the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y. Kathy, who is vice presi dent of the F. T. A., will be escorted by Douglas Moss. The Booster’s Club chose Carolyn Wright as its sponsor. Her activities include secretary and treasurer of the Booster’s Club, a Jr. varsity cheer leader, and a member of the Keyettes. Carolyn’s escort will be Bob McLoud. Representing the French Club at the homecoming activities will be Linda Nelson. She is a member of the Dramatic Club, the National Honor Society, the F. T. A., and is Assistant Photography Editor of the annual. She will be escorted by Gene Ward. During the homecoming festivities, Dottie McLaurine will serve as spon sor for the Sr. Hi-Y. She is a member of the Spanish Club, Safety Council and the Speech Club. Doyle Hayes is her escort. Nancy Haskins, sponsor for the Student Council, is a member of the National Honor Society, the Civinet tes. and is Associate Editor of the annuaf. She chose Dewitt Jones as her escort. Eila Rae Walker, representing the F. T. A., is in the National Honor Society, the Spanish Club, and the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y. Tripp May is her escort. Ann Porterfield, escorted by Larry Coble, is the sponsor for the Speech Club. She is secretary of the Keyettes and the Dramatic Club. Escorted by Ben Rushin, will be Rosanna Gant, the Dramatic Club’s sponsor. Rosanna is a member of the Speech Club and the Glee Club. (Continued on next page) Members of the debating team, new annual assistants, and three graduates of Williams High School headline this month’s news. Eight members of the 1957-58 varsity debating team were chosen recently by Mrs. Tom Dula and Mr. L. G. Guthrie. They are; Jim Cop land, Miles Hadley, Wesley Batton, Paul Robinson, Calvin Linnemann, Ranny Umberger, Betty Finley, and Mike McMannus. These eight members will be re duced to four at a later date for the North Carolina Triangular Debates. Grant Directs 85 In Marciiiiig Band Eighty-five students who have been selected for the W. H. S. Marching Band by Mr. Harold Grant, director, will make their fourth appearance in Salisbury, November I. Under the leadership of Bill Har- riss. Drum Major, the band began practicing August 15 with rehearsals Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school from 3:30 until 5:30. A new schedule is being used as the band is doing concert and contest work as well as marching. A council has been organized which will handle problems that arise in the band. The following are offi cers of the council; Johnny Dunlap, president; Jimmy Robertson, vice president; Becky Jones, secretary- treasurer; Linda Clark, librarian; Tommy Lynch, property manager. Representatives from the varsity band are Sue Ann James and Gary Surrat. The band has been invited to at tend the Band Day at Duke Univer sity October 19. This is a day when bands from all over the state play together at a football game. At this game Duke will be host to Wake Forest. In the Homecoming game against Raleigh the band will aid in the half time show furnishing a formation and music. The topic for the debate this year is foreign aid. The members of the junior varsity debating team are; Chris Faylc, Da vid McCorklc, Ann Reddick, and Richard Linnemann. The junior var sity team was organized to acquaint these people with debating. The following were chosen as Jun ior assistants for the 1957-58 Doe- Wah-Jack; Susan Hartis, Ann Porter field, Judy Wrape, Alan Long and Reid Rogers. Susan Hartis is a member of the Civinettes and the Booster’s Club. She is akso a varsity cheerleader and secretary and treasurer of her home room. Ann Porterfield, secretary of the Dramatics Club and vice pr;|^idei)t of her homeroom is a member of the Keyettes, Booster’s Club, and the Junior Tri-Hi-Y. Judy Wrape is a member of the Scribbler’s Club. Debating Club, Jun ior Tri-Hi-Y, and Booster’s Club. She is treasurer of the Speech Club and devotional chairman of her home room. A member of the Jr. Civitan Club, vice president of the Booster’s Club, president of his homeroom and WHS clown are .some of Alan Long’’s ac tivities. Reid Rogers, secretary and treas urer of his homeroom, is a member of the Jr. Civitan and Booster’s Club. Three Williams High graduates are on the staff of the East. Carolinian, the school paper of East Carolina College. Lee Phillips is on the feature and circulation staffs; Elizabeth Wil liams, the feature staff; and Judy Samuels, the news staff. C. F.
