Highsteppers Appear During Half-Time “One, two. three kick!” are famil iar words to eight majorettes who add beauty and color to the Williams High School Marching Band. Clad in snowy white uniforms trimmed with gold braid, they prance over the field twirling their batons. Original routines by these high steppers supplement the formations and musical arrangements. Marion ; Lorimer, Williams graduate, has also helped them with some routines. They were taught their style of strutting by Janice Welsworth, Ma jorette of America of 1954 while in training at East Carolina College in Greenville. North Carolina. The group has a new majorette this year, Gloria Christopher. The others are: Betty Jo Hooper, Nancy Lorimer, Shelby Strange, Diane Wais- ner, Peggy Lindley, Linda Clark and June Harris. Tackle Jimmy Skidmore, left, and Halfback Jerry Hollifl eld are expected to star in tonight’s Homecoming clash. S. in a game October 4 at the new Myers Park stadium. It was a scoreless game until the fourth quarter when Quarterback Ray Farris made contact with his right end, Duncan Mortan, for a 40-year pass play. Some of the Myers Park rooters said Burlington’s defense was the toughest encountered by the Mus tangs. Sparking the defense for the Bulldogs was Russell Cooper, fresh man center and linebacker. Cooper led many tackles and intercepted a Mustang pass. He was assuming the duties of Mike Littlejohn who is out of play with a leg injury. The Bulldogs seemed to lack the right offensive play to take them down into pay dirt. On the opening kickoff Jerry Hollifield almost broke away but was stopped by the last man in his path. He carried the ball to the Mustangs’ 44-yard-line. During the third quarter the Mus tangs got a good look at ball hand ling from the Bulldogs. They had control of the ball in every play ex cept for five plays which were run by Myers Park. However, the Bull dogs were not able to penetrate any further than the Mustangs’ 35-yard- line in that period. Caps In Contest Game Tonight Friday night, October 18, Williams High School’s Bulldogs play host to the Raleigh Caps in the Bulldogs’ annual homecoming game at Memor ial Stadium. Going into the game the Bulldogs have a sea.son’s record of 1 win against 4 losses while the Caps rest with a comfortable record of 5 wins and I loss. Bruce Phillips of the News and Observer stated ‘The Ral eigh Caps are ranked in some quart ers as the top high school team in the state.” In the game with Goldsboro which the Caps won by a score of 21-14, the Caps had only four regulars in the starting lineup. Raleigh Coach Clyde Walker said, “The team is in the worst condition it has been in since I have been coaching, but I think we have enough replacements to fill the spots.” “The Bulldogs, on the the other hand, are ready, willing, and waiting to upset Raleigh,” Coach Alvin Hooks commented. Led by Quarterback Sammy Hunt they will ’ be giving Raleigh all they have got.” Coach Bill England’s pigskin snapper will be on the lookout for the Caps’ star, Jerry Cordell in hopes of stopping him. Scouts reports indicate that Raleigh moves the ball mostly on the ground and in the Goldsboro game had dif ficulty keeping possesion of the ball, losing five fumbles to Goldsboro. The score of this game was 21-14 in favor of the Caps, however.
