Pages HIGH LIFE Friday, April 28, 1978 GIRLS START TRADITION by Anthony Beard As if we didn’t have enough teams to cheer for, the Girls’ Soccer team is starting a new one. In its first year of action and like most of the Whirlies teams, the girls are enjoying a winning season. They are 3-1-1, and if you feel left out screaming for Whirlie baseball, or if you’re just getting your voice back from Whirlie basketball, it’s time to get it back in shape for another champion ship caliber Whirlie team. Grimsley’s 22 member squad includes: Joan Essa, Colleene Wolff, Ann Bemus, Martha Hughes, Cheryl Allard, Charity Ernest, Amy Frazier, Kathy Kel ly, Mysoon Rizk, Pam Newell, Leslie Lewis, Shaun Carter, Jane Gerlach, Jenny Enright, Erin Baldwin, Robin Ram, Coleen Baldwin, Amanda Stang, Jackie Barrier, Kelly Haines, Beth Mi chaud, and the team’s manager is Rita Abernathy. Coming up on the girls’ sche dule are: 4/17 Cougars; 4/21 Angles; 4. 25 Page; 5/2 Pumas; 5/5 Coug.-rs; and the Whirlies end their regular season facing the Angles on Monday May 8. All games will be played on the Page field. According to Mrs. Lambert, the Girls’ Coach, the progress of the team has been great. “Our biggest plus is our willingness to win.” Special thanks should be- given to Eric Blume, Howard^ Bemus, and Brent Sessoms for their help in coaching the team. The student body will play a major role in how Girls Soccer will go in this area - so come out and support the team. AT-UTASr TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE) with a 2-0 shut out of the Wrangler Cougars. Game saving saves by Jackie Barrier and Colleen Wolf and a first period goal by Kelly Haines enabled Grimsley to edge the Angels 1-0. Charity Ernest set up Haines for the Whirlie score. Bouncing back from their 1-0 loss to Page, the Whirlie girls gained a tie with the Unified Tigers as Joan Essa scored an unassisted goal to provide Grims ley’s fire power. Grimsley improved its record to 3-1-1 as they defeated the Pumas 6-0. The Whirlies put together their best game of the season as they played as a team and talked to each other on the field - something that had held the Whirlies from reaching their po tential in earlier contests. Kathy Kelly, Shaun Carter, Joan Essa, Leslie Lewis each scored goals and \manda Stang had two goals in le Whirlie win. J V Boys Satisfied by Wayne Early Grimsley’s Junior Varsity base ball team has opened an impres sive season riding on four wins against one loss. In the first game, Grimsley used an explosive offensive as well as good defensive techniques to thump Allen Jay be a lopsided score of 14-2. The Whirlies faced arch rival Page in the second game, coming away with an impressive 14-7 win. The team then battled Madi- son-Mayodan bringing home a 6-2 victory. Backing up Grims ley’s .750 record are their explo sive hitters, Ken Anderson, Dar rel Campbell, Steve Johnson, and Jim Kobos. Many others add to the attack. On the defensive side you can look for Greg Bugbee, the short stop, Mike Cates at second has and Steve Tracy in the outfield. There seem to be no real weak spots in the field. The entire defensive team should be congratulated as they have given up, but 21 runs this season. At first Ais seems like a pretty high number but when you consider almost half of this num ber came in the lopsided, 10-2 loss to Page, the figure looks a little better. Coach Dowd feels as long as there ic a will to win, and good attitudes continue among the players, an impressive record could be resulting this season. As for the loss to Page, the Whirlies never got anyone on base, the offense never got on track. Unfortunately, a great record is all they can roll up because only two of the city schools and no one else in our conference sponsors a team, so Grimsley is forced to schedule any team it can.
