Florence and the Machine delivers motivating lyrics laced with deep meanings in 'Ceremonials’ BY LINDSEY JENKINS Photographer English-born musician Florence Welch, also known as Florence and the Machine, released her second album entitled "Ceremonials" on October 31, 2011. This album shares a similar sound to her first album called "Lungs," but it also features tracks with different and fresh sounds not yet heard from her. Welch wanted "Ceremonials" to be an improved version of "Lungs" with a "more dark, more heavy, bigger drum sounds, bigger bass, but with more of a whole sound," according to an article on Wikipedia. Critics de scribe her work as a combination of rock, alternative, and soul. In the first track, called "Only If for a Night," Welch sings about a dream she recalled and what sort of meaning she interpreted. It is one of the slower songs on the album and begins with the sound of cathedral bells. "Shake It Out" carries an upbeat sound and is very catchy. One line of the lyrics that really stands out is "it's always darkest be fore the dawn," which symbolizes that dark and sad times will always exist, but happy times are never far behind. The title "Shake It Out" implies that one should remain strong to overcome dif ficult situations in life and keep a posi tive attitude in general. "What the Water Gave Me" features several instruments, but most notice ably guitar and harp. "It's a song for the water because in music and art, what I'm really in terested in, are things that are over whelming. The ocean seems to be nature's great overwhelmer. When I was writing this song, I was think ing a lot about all those people who've lost their lives in vain in at tempts to save their loved ones from drowning. It's about water in all forms and all bodies. It's about a lot of things," said Welch in an explana tion of the song's intended meaning. "Never Let Me Go" explores the musician's feelings as she finds relief from stress in her life, thus it also con cerns her finding an escape from all her problems. In "Breaking Down," also regarding her personal struggles, Welch writes that she sees something in "the edge of the room," meaning she has trouble sleeping because of haunting nightmares. The song is fast paced with soft singing that sets the mood of the song. Very powerful both lyrically and vocally is the tune called "No Light, No Light." Listeners enjoy hearing the broad range of notes Welch can reach. The lyrics include "You can't choose what stays and what fades away," suggesting that different events will happen in one's life, and no one knows for sure who or what will influence him the most or who will remain around the longest. "Seven Devils," a slow, eerie- sounding track, concerns the seven venial sins: Greed, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. Welch sings about how these sins taunt her and tempt her. Another fast-paced track, "Heartlines," is about lines in the palm of someone's hand and how they are supposed to determine the destiny of his or her love life. Welch writes, "Just keep following the heartlines on your hand," insisting that love finds different paths for everyone. In the track called "All This and Heaven, Too," Welch searches desper ately for some sense of understanding about what she does not comprehend. She would give her all and "heaven, too" just to understand what she can not figure out. "Leave My Body" is a song in which Welch claims she wants to leave the past and bad memories behind. She wants to be finished with conflicts that hold her back and keep her from enjoying a better future. "Remain Nameless" is a slow track about how people tend to let others down, so one cannot really depend upon anyone but himself or herself. For this rea son, Welch claims that she surrounds herself with individuals who need her, unlike most people. "Ceremonials" provides listeners a selection of music that truly portrays Welch as a growing artist. She has certainly transformed herself since her debut album in 2009. This album is definitely worth the purchase.
