March 13, 1937 "do you Bow that? Probably no new book has sold a million copies in as short a time as Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With The Wind”. The beautiful Sonja Heinie of ice- skating fame has foot trouble. The Duke of Windsor is still agitat ing his much-worked-on plan for the unemployed. It is said by publishers that every copy of a book sold means, on the average, five readers. Katherine Cornell usually reads a novel by “Stanislawski” or somebody like that, just before an interview so she can remember enough to sound clever. The “Publisher's Weekly” records the fact that more new hooks were published in 1936 than in any previous year according to their files. General Chiang Kai-Shek and his Wellesley-educated wife have started a clean-up campaign in China. That, according to the Literary Digest, however, many of the more knowing regard the plan as a cover-up for the general’s activities. By adding caraway seed to Lim- burger cheese, scientists of the dairy division of the University of Cali fornia are removing, to some extent this cheese’s strongest quality. Among the out-of-town alumnae pres ent at the same banquet were Vivian Hilton, Laura Quattlebaum, Kather ine Shellam, and Mrs. John Ormand. Gifts were presented to Nancy Mc- Iver, president of the chapter, by the active chapter, and to Elinor Clayton, pledge instructor, by the pledges. I^yncli Crockett has been elected to serve as president of the chapter for the coming year. The National Convention will be held in July at Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Among those who will attend from the local chapiter are Nancy Mclver and Lynch Crockett. Alpha Delta Pi Frances Marion O'Hair was chosen as the best-all-round pledge, and her name has been engraved on a silver loving cup in recognition of her honor. This was announced at the Charlotte Hotel. Among those present at the banquet were the following out-of-town alumnae: Mary Frances Ehrlich, Nancy Timberlake, Mary Mc- Master, Margaret Trohaugh, Ann Dorcas White, and Frankie Hoyle. Miss Denny, English instructor of the faculty, was also present. The new initiates were presented with shoulder corsages of violets, the sorority flower. Mrs. Ann Hargraves, Province President, will arrive Saturday for a short visit. The chapter will en tertain in her honor at a buffet supper Saturday night. Alpha Gamma Delta Among the out-of-town alumnae present at the initiation banquet were: Virginia Senn, Sarah Wallace, Rachel Hamilton, Margaret Floyd, Roberta Kilgore, and Pauline Haw ley. Betty Hunter and Eleanor Guy ton were presented with recognition pins for being the most interested and best-all-round and having best scholar ship record, respectively. The new initiates were presented with com pacts hearing the sorority seal. The National Convention is to he held July 6 to 10, at Troutdale-in- the-Pines, Evergrt^en, Colorado. Several members of the active chapter plan to attend. The chapter will exhibit a clay model of the chapter house, which is being made by Ade line Kilgore. Kappa Delta At the annual banquet of Kappa Delta sorority, given in lumor of the new initiates, each initiate was in troduced in a unique manner to the active and alumnae chapter, as a white rose. Alice Wright Murphy was presented with a ring for being the best-all-round pledge, and Georgie Hurt was given a recognition pin for having the best scholastic aver age. Dr. and Mrs. Goddard and Mrs. Agnew were guests at the ban quet. Out-of-town alumnae present included: I.ouise Holland, Edni’ Hunter, Ann Fayssoux Johnston, Mrs. Robert Elayes, Mrs. Mary Mc Culloch, and Mrs. Francis Holman. Chi Omega Theta Gamma chapter of Chi Omega fraternity announced that Marguerite Buffum was the hest-all- round pledge at the annual initiation banquet given at the Hotel Charlotte. She received a ring bearing the soro rity seal. Frances Stough and Vir ginia Smith were recognized as having written the best sorority songs. All the new initiates were given silver bar pins bearing the seal, Mrs, Booker, faculty sponsor, was present. Also present were the following out- of-town alumnae: Jean Stough, Caro line Morris, and Brian Johnson. After the banquet many of the chapter members went out to the summer home of Camille Hunter on the Catawba River to spend the night. Phi Mu The local chapter of Phi Mu have elected officers for the coming year, as follows: Lois Hodges, president; Flelen Jordan, vice-president; Lucile Harmon, second vice-president; Vir- Linnean Club Holds Meeting The regular monthly meeting of the Linnean Club was held Wednesday afternoon, March 10. Eleanor Carr gave an interesting discussion of the life of Linneas for whom the club was named. Alice Parker presented a delight fully illustrated lecture on the Mag nolia Gardens. Miss Sara Nooe is faculty sponsor of the club and Alice Parker is presi dent. Girls Join Social Club The Charlotte Spinster’s Club, recently elected three leading Queens- Chicora girls into their membership. These girls are: Jane Ellen Taylor, vice-president of the local chapter of Kappa Delta; Ashley Dulin, a mem ber of Kappa Delta, and especially outstanding in dramatics; and Martha Ware Pitts, editor of the Queens annual and vice-president of the Theta Gamma chajiter of Chi Omega. ginia Taylor, .secretary; Jo Hackney, treasurer; Margaret Flowe, registrar. The convention of the second dis trict will be held liere April 2-i. Tlie National President will be present and preside. There will be delegates from Duke, Randolph-Macon, William and Mary, and George Washington University. At the initiation banquet Dot Alex ander was given a sorority seal guard in recognition of being chosen best all-round pledge.
