COMINGS AND GOINGS ' W^ay backih the '7bs7Miclia'ei Robinsdn'came td*Penla’nd as a photography student and stayed on to become Penland's second official "Chief Weekend Cook." He left Penland in late 1974 and went on to a variety of jobs in a variety of locations across America, including (believe it or not) a job as a cook. But one thing led to another and eventually Michael resumed his original career path and entered the field of architecture. He met and married potter Diana Gillispie and they had a son named Ellis. Now they've moved back to this area (Asheville) where Michael works with Tim Samsel Architects and Diana has a studio at HigKwater Center. Their address is 30 Aurora Drive, Asheville, NC 28805. Glassworkers Marc Petrovic and Kari Russell-Pool have moved into Ken Carder's house and studio in Bakersville. Marc specializes in hot glass sculpture and his wife Kari is a lampworker. In the New Year they'll be spending a month in Italy where Marc will study with Pino Signetto in Burano. France Robinson recently bought a cozy 700 sq. ft. house in Lily Branch, four miles from the School. The house sits on nine acres of meadow, rhododendrons and wooded hills. Glen Gardner and Chris Siewers were married Septem ber 14 and are now planning to move to Pittsburgh in February. Their address will be 152 Woodshire Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15215. Glen and Chris met at Penland eleven years ago when Chris was a student of Marvin Jensen's. Glen's house, studio and two acres of land is now for sale. If you are interested, call him at 704-675-5318. GOVERNOR’S AWARD CEREMONY As reported in the last Penland Line, Bill Brown, Direc tor Emeritus of Penland, received the 1991 North Caro lina Award in Fine Arts for his pivotal role in the renais sance of American crafts on November 22. He was hon ored at a reception hosted by Governor and Mrs. James Martin at the Executive Mansion during which he re ceived the Award Medal. The Brown family invited the many Penland folk who had journeyed to Raleigh to honor Bill to come to their hotel suite afterwards. It had the feel of an expanded family reunion and several of those who attended were reminded of the regular session-parties held during the summers in Bill and Jane's house during their tenure at Penland. A GIFT OF HEALTH Brad Batchelor, a chiropractor in Boone, NG, attended a papermaking class last summer. While he was here he treated many students and instructors and came to realize the tremendous demands placed upon the art world bio- mechanically. He recently wrote us to say, "My contribu tion to Penland is all services and care at 50% off of what the artist must pay out of their pocket at this clinic. This includes teachers, students, employees, maintenance and the director. I really appreciate the fact that such a cool school is so close and will help all I can." Brad is located at 228 Highway 105 Extension in Boone (704-264-0140). 1^ Thank You Penland Docents T~he Penland Gallery has completed a very exciting season.
