Page Four THE MESSENGER Friday, January 31, 1947 LOOPERS AND INSPECTORS PUNCHING OUT Men’s Bowling Team' Wins The First Half BY M. M. ELLIS ’Ihc iiarriiss & Covington Men’s bowling team is still in its winning ways by topping the first half of “The Commercial Bowling League-” In addition to winning the first half, our team is high in the three game total with 1,698, has the high average of 529, holds the single high game of 152, and leads in the three game set with 388. The only thing which we don’t lead in is the high average per game which, much to our sorrow, is held by Roy Hauser of Piedmont Manufactur ing Company. However, we will try to do something about this be fore the season ends. To those who don’t understand how the league is run. I’ll try to explain. The league is composed of eight teams. Every Monday night two teams are paired off, and they play each other three games. In a season you meet a team, four times, two times in the first half, two in the last half. The team winning the Championship will receive a gold trophy and 60 per cent of the Jack Pot money which is put into the pot every Monday night by each player. Speaking for the team we take our hats off to (old man) Charley Deviney who is a splendid bowler and a good teammate. When need ing a good game, we always call on Charley. That’s a Jc.ke, Son . ♦.. The hotel manager walked uj io the new guest in the lobby. ^ X “Your room is rcc.dy now." i said, “but because of a shortage of help you’ll have to make your own bed.” “Oh, I don’t mind making my own bed.” “That’s fine,” said the manager, “here’s a hammer and saw.” Little Doris was being scolded by her mother. “Don’t you know, Doris,” she said, “that if you keep on doing naughty things your children will be naughty too?” “Oh mother,” returned the youngster. “Now you’ve given yourself away-” A young matron stalled her car at a traffic light one day. She stamped on the starter, tried again and choked her engine. Behind her an impatient motorist honked his horn steadily. Finally she got out and walked back to his car. “I’m awfully sorry, but I dont seem to be able to start my car, she told the driver pleasantly. “If you will go up there and start it for me. I’ll stay here and lean on the horn.” A woman visitor to the Bronx Zoo kept pestering one of the keepers with questions. Finally his patience gave out. “Is that Hippopotamus a male or female?” came the next ques tion. “Madam," he replied, “what pos sible difference could that make to anybody except another hippo potamus?” Bonuses Distributed As in the past, employees of this mill received checks just be fore Christmas for vacation pay. This year 135 checks were distrib uted amounting to a total of $5,978.35. All who have been with the company for a year or more, up to five years, received 2 per cent of their earnings from Octo ber 1, 1945 to October 1, 1946. All who have been with the company for five years or more received 4 per cent of their earnings figured on the same period. Checks were distributed just be fore Christmas as this is the time of year that an extra amount of money is most welcome. Stork Club Our congratulations to Hubert Myers on the birth of a daughter, Patricia Ann on December 11. Mrs. Leila Williame is a proud grandmother, her daughter and son-in-law have a baby girl, Pa tricia Maxine. Good Housekeeping Plan To Be Intiated (Continued from Page One) are for one purpose—to be used. It takes little more effort to throw trash in a trash can than to mere ly drop it on the floor- To replace empty bottles in the crates pro vided instead of leaving them ly ing around, we feel, is not too much to ask. With this thought in mind, we have divided the plant into the fol lowing divisions: Boarding Room, D.vo House, Knitting Room, Loop ing Room, Inspecting Room, Ship ping Room, Pairing Room, and the folders. Rider girls, and transfer girls will be combined into what will be known as the Finishing Room. Effective as of today, an inspec tion of the entire mill will be held once every two weeks, and after each of the above named divisions has been inspected they will receive a numerical grade. These grades as well as the faults found will be posted on the bulletin boards, and a running average by divisions will be published in “The Messenger.” We have tried to cooperate with you in giving you a more desira ble place io which to work. Now we are asking your cooperation in trying to keep our plant a cleaner place in which to work. So let’s go all out and be “Good House Keepers.” And The Years Roll By We might be a little late in ex tending some December birthday greetings, but we do want to say Happy Birthday to Texie Johnson, Lola Thacker, Donald Gibhardt, Alberta Kennedy, Lessie Calloway, Charlie Long, Elizabeth Childs, Novie Hardee, Raymond Norris, Benjamin Mock, Maggie Kennedy, Violet Howard and Pinnie Hutch ens, all of whom had a birthday December.
