Leaves, Leaves, Leaves Aren’t they gorgeous! “No" might be the reply of some of the juniors and sophomores because they have seen so many of them lately. Why have they seen so many of them lately? V7ell, because they have been making leaf notebooks. We really do not think that they are not pretty anymore. As a matter of fact, now we appreciate them more and are more observant of such splendors of nature. Hed, yellow, orange, and combinations of these hues adorning the trees for miles in every direction will brighten your day if you will just take time to look around. So when ”one of those days" comes while you’re at school, just step out nnd look at the wonderful works of viiat must have been a magnificent Supreme being. In case you don’t have time to go outside, step in Mrs, Barbour’s noom. She will probably let you look at some of the notebooks. Of course, she won’t let you help her grade them, since she loves leaves and saves that treat for herself. Or—^will it be ^s, Barbour who replies "no" by the time she finishes grading them all? 1 Sylvia Whitley HALLOWEEN Halloween, traditionally a aight of ghosts, goblins, and strange Occurrences was celebrated on its ove, Saturday night, this year, Pranks were plentiful and spirits Wore high among the students of SHS. ^any teenagers, by truck-load and car-load, rambled around Smithfield looking for mischief, but stayed out Of trouble from the looks of Clark loung’s front lawn. Some of the milder-minded set devoted their energy to the Hallo ween Carnival. Bobbing for apples, "fishing", playing bingo, riding Ponies, bowling, and stuffing themselves with all kinds of goodies, the carnival goers awaited the ^nouncement of the Halloween king O'Hd queen, who were oddly enough a a freshman boy and a junior girl. Congratulations to Elaine Allen, sponsored by Miss Turner's home room, and Bob Forbes, sponsored by Mr, Wiggs’ homeroom. The king and queen, along with the dance contest winners, Page Perkinson, Dean Anderson, and June Smith re ceived prizes from Smithfield merchants, Ann Jones Kathy Batten JUNIORS TAKE PSAT TESTS On Saturday, October 23, there were many sleepy—eyed juniors con gregating in the lunchroom for the PSAT tests. These tests are the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests, which help to prepare you for college. Mr. Sloan, directed us, and Mr. Creech, Coach Brown, and Mrs. Hornaday assisted by giving out the tests and taking up the fees. The tests were part math and part verbal reasoning. These tests lasted from nine until eleven. Al most eveiyone thought the math was much easier than the verbal reason ing — that is everyone who came. A few of the juniors completely forgot the tests and slept during the vdiole thing I Kay Sugg BITS OF SATIRE We’re told that a mile-wide asteriod could hit the earth in 196S, So should we plan to sell the old Grand Canyon and keep the new one or what?
