PAGE FOUR FORSYTH TECHNICAL INSTITUTE NOVEMBER 26, 1968 CAMPUS TALK "Christmas Wishes" Thoughts and wishes all over America and throughout the world are turning hopefully to the Christmas season. Chil dren are longing for toys; parents are yearning for the ability to pay the bills. Students at FTI are hoping this Christ mas season, and here are a few of the things they wish for: Greg White typifies the male, with his dream of a car, a Dodge RT, to be exact. He would also like 55 gallons of ginger- ale for a buddy in boot camp. He prom ised to send it “if he ran across any.” Howard Kellam would like a cure for black eyes; he happens to have a “shiner” at the time. Mrs. Mildred Pierce, like many of the students, would greatly appreciate an immunization for test-tension. A nice idea comes from Harvey Hall, who wants “lots and lots and lots of lovin’.” Peace throughout the world is the plea of all Americans. Brenda Flynn shows how millions of people feel when she says, “I know what I want for Christ mas. I want all the GI’s in Viet Nam to come home — to stay.” On a merrier note is Robert Withering- ton, who would like to have a year’s supply of German beer. The staff wishes each and every one a Merry Christmas and hopes that Santa Claus is kind to all of you! Tech Students Face Exams “In an examination those who do not wish to know ask questions of those who cannot tell.” Sir Walter Raleigh On December 6th, 9th, and 10th, the students at Forsyth Technical Institute will be wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, for those are the days that exams start. Students: be smart and study! This is the only defense against this deed that has been bestowed upon us. Now let us all take this warning and study really hard, because it is impor tant and because in order for some of us to be here next quarter, we must pass these exams. FEATURED CURRICULUM "Practical Nursing" The Practical Nurse Education Pro gram of Forsyth Technical Institute has an enrollment of fifty-nine students. These students are divided into four separate groups of which half have clini cal practice at Forsyth Memorial Hos pital and the other half practice at the N. C. Baptist Hospital. This is a one-year four quarter course in which the stu dents receive classroom instruction and nursing practice. The Practical Nursing student wears the established gray and white uniform, white shoes and hose and name plate. She is required to keep her hair short or put-up off her collar. After a period of basic instruction in nursing fundamentals, the students prac tice in the hospital under the supervision of a nursing instructor. Caps are to be distributed for second quarter. The first quarter keeps the nursing student mostly in the classroom. Prac tice labs are held during first quarter in which the students practice bedmak ing, giving baths, and back rubs, and taking the temperature, pulse, respira tion and blood pressure. After this she is ready to meet her first patient with con fidence accompanied by a bit of ner vousness; but practice brings that secure feeling! And Then It Snowed Those students unable to listen to their radios due to power failure were dis gusted upon their arrival at Forsyth Tech on Tuesday, November 12, where they learned school was closed. After awakening late that morning to discover their clock had failed to alarm and that they had only a short while to get ready for school, they tripped over chairs try ing to find everything they needed to get ready for school. Their flash light bat teries were dead, their lamps had no oil, their heating system failed to work, and if there was water for a bath, it was cold. But, the next day things went back to normal again and the teachers began making plans for making up the lost day. Many students have stayed at school a few hours late to make up the classes they missed — others were just lucky! DON'T FORGET!
