Fighting Apathy By Steve Turco Apathy as defined by Webster’s Dictionary is a “lack of interest or concern.” Broadly speaking, apathy is regarded by many as a state of indifference. It is more than that. Apathy has become a social malaise of our times, an opiate for the late nineteen seventies early eighties. Would many argue that the characterization of our times as the “era of me” is an incorrect one? If we are to fight so pernicious an agent as apathy, we must be willing to recognize that, along with the right to advance our self- interest in everyday affairs, we have a corresponding duty and responsibility to grow. Expanding our general knowledge can help us to become more responsible individuals and citizens. Isn’t this why we are here at FTI? True fulfillment, whether it be emotional, intellectual or monetary, is not achieved through apathy. One cannot hope to experience the best in life unless he in turn gives the best to life. We are, as human beings, commanded to choose life. Let us, therefore, live life to its fullest and get involved. As the new term begins, consider how you can become “involved with life” and fight apathy. Why not join an existing organization at FTI? Experience the challenge of growth and the joy of giving and sharing with your peers. Make FTI a better school! We, the staff of The Reporter, are dedicated in our fight against apathy at Forsyth Tech. Join with us in supporting our Student Government Association and other positive organizations. Find out how exciting involvement with life really is. Christmas Is A Feeling. . . In this busy season with all the hustle and bustle of activity, we easily forget the true meaning of the season. Take a few moments to reflect, to count your blessings, and rejoice in the joys that are ours to hold. Christmas is a feeling - - Christmas is a street - busy with rushed faces buying gifts to please. For it is a time of giving, a time of family and home of feasting and laughing and remembering. Happy hearts join mental joys with Christmas colors and sounds rejoicing the holy season. It is indeed, a holiday . . . More important, it is a holy time when men are asked to live together as one within the family of man. Its love, kindness, goodwill - all point to hope. Tomorrow can be better, must be better. Those who are wise demand better tomorrows, as it was once promised. Christmas, then remains the promise..the hope. It asks that you gift others, love others, live in health with peace. Be thankful, be happy this 1981 Christmas with the beauty of its reason. Clyde F. McSwain A Special Tribute The staff of The Reporter would like to pay a special tribute to Clyde F. McSwain who spent several hours of his time one evening on the layout of this first issue. McSwain is a member of the Board of Trustees and the printing instructor at the Career Center. Without his help and guidance, we wouldn’t have made it. Thanks, Mac! THE REPORTER Published by The STUDENTS OF FORSYTH TECHNICAL INSTITUTE Winston-Salem, N.C. STAFF Financial Information Basic Grants 1981-82 Students still have time to apply for the Basic Education Op portunity Grant (Pell Grant) for this current school year. The deadline is March 15, 1982. It only takes a stamp and a little form to see if you are eligible. Applications and assistance to complete the Basic Grant forms are available in the Financial Aid Office. Financial Aid Workshop There are many changes taking place in financial aid for the 1982-83 school year. It is imperative that students applying for financial aid for 82-83 do so immediately after January 1 and that the forms are completed accurately. In order to help students complete the forms and to explain the many changes, a meeting has been arranged for: Wednesday, December 16 at 11:00 a.m. and Thursday, December 17 at 6:00 p.m. in Auditorium B, Administration Building. This meeting is especially for students currently receiving financial assistance.
