Several kinds of Insect girdiera
and "prunera” complete their life
cycle of development in the twigs
they cut from the trees. These twigs
fall to the ground and should be
picked up and burned.
The pecan twig girdler attacks
both pecans and hickories. If you
have pecan trees, it will pay you
to also pick up the dead twigs und
er near-by hickory trees.
Some trends: Acording to the
USDA. most industry experts pre
dict that by 1970. 50 percent of the
nation s Irish potato crop will be
processed. About 20 per cent of the
crop was processed In 1961. The re
tail market offers the beat oppor
tunity for increasing sales, partic
ularly in dehydrated masked pota
toes and frozen French fries.
Production of American fanners
increased S per cent but required
3 per cent less labor. This establish
ed a new high In efficiency in 1900.
One farm worker now provides
food and fiber for 20 persons, two
more than in 1959 and 12 mors
than in IM9.
The USDA also reports that the

tor nine-tenths of the total con

cline. Canned carrots remained sta
ble and the use of frzoen carrots
has increased.
Two developments, now under
way. give promise of revolutioniz
ing the pickle industry. High yield
ing hybrids are being developed
which will lend themselves to me
chanical harvesting. Michigan Stats
University scientists are refining a
machine to do a “once-over Job.”
Farming is no longer away of
life but a highly specialized busi
ness. Sound business principles
must be employed along with in
creased efficiency in production
practices and group marketing.
I am in agreement with Commis
sioner of Agriculture L. Y. Ballen
tine, when he says there is still a
place for the small farmer in the
modern day scheme of things.
This is particularly true in the
production of fruits, vegetables and
ornamental plants because all re
quire intensive methods and effi
cient management.
Free enterprise is the rule in the
production and processing of hor
ticultural crops, rather than the ex
ception. All signs point to a con-
tinuation of this freedom.
