WILKES KILLER
GETS 10 YEARS
North Wilkes bo ro ? Miss Myrt
Woodie, the 43 -year-old moun
tain woman who said she shot
and killed her brother-in-law for
21 years' abuse of her sister and
their children, was sentenced in
Wilkes court to 10 years in pri
son.
Last week the woman, whose
marksmanship with a .32 rife re
sulted in death to Tam Miller on
a fountain path on the Blue
Ridge December 1, entered a plea
of guilty of second degree mur
der and Judge Dan K. Moore
heard the evidence which dis
closed by her own admission she
had shot MilW Just after a
quarrel at her home and while
he was proceeding to his house,
his arms filled with groceries.
Sheriff C. G. Poindexter quoted
her as saying that she "had stood
it just as long as she could," re
ferring to what she called abuse
of nis wife and children. She
said that on several occasions he
had run his wife and children
out into the severe cold on the
Blue Ridge.
Commenting on the case from
the bench. Judge Moore said^iat
evidence of the woman is sor
rowing a rifle that day indicated
that she may have planned and
deliberated the shooting and that
was probably under the im
eion that she was doing the
right thing. He also stated that
no person can take over the law
for punishment, and proceeded
with the sentence. Judge Moore
explained that under the plea he
had a latitude of from 2 to 30
years in the sentence and that he
was giving the defendant two
thirds of the benefit of the lati
tude provided by law.
