- ? ? ? Democrat Staffer Finds Beauty Queens Can, After All, Goof f1 J| By RACHEL RIVERS Hist America of 1963, Jac quelyn Jeanne Mayer, has goof ed. I have always wondered about Ml*s Americas ? what they really think, how they behave in private as o posed to how they appear in public. Well, Saturday night at the Hiss North Carolina Pageant in Greensboro Hemorial Auditor ium, I found out. Sponsored by the Guilford College Junior Chamber of Commerce, the pageant cat beautifully conducted, with tal ented Marilyn Van Dervur, Miss America of 1968, as mis tress of ceremoiea. She moved through the even ing with grace and poise, those things that Miss America haa always stood for. She sang, in troduced contestants and even joked with the five finalists as Discusses Work HISS AMERICA OF 1963, Jacquelyn Jeanne Mayer of Sandusky, Ohio, discusses her work with a Guilford Jaycee and a local newsman at the Bliss North Carolina Pageant last weekend in Greaasboro. ? "Maybe it's just southern humor, and I don't understand it," she shrugged. Earlier in the program, 1962's Hiss America, Maria Beale Fletcher, entertained the audience with unaccompanied folk songs. Representing Ashe ville in July, 1961, Maria was crowned Miss North Carolina on the same stage in Greens boro. It was at the conclusion of her performance that I sneaked out the exit ? where other press representatives had been going since the show began, for a "breather", I thought ? and low and behold! there was Miss America of 1963, Jacquelyn Jeanne Mayer. She was a lovely girl, with dark shining hair supporting a large Miss America crown, and she wore a lovely gown of white with large attractive flowers from shoulder to toe (on the dress). She was talking to a stage door guard and a newsman who arrived late, and who waa alert enough to diacover her hiding place, where ahe awaited the final moment when ahe would crown the hew Miss North Carolina. I took a seat on a atop while ahe anawered queationa from the man and shared her glanc ea with an impressed police man. She really waa quite a lovely girl, until a young man with a preaa card stuck to his lapel rushed in for a "behind the scenes" story. Unfortunately, he had not been keeping up with all the pageant promotion that had featured her picture in several newspapers. "I'm sorry," he said, "I'm sure I should know who you are. Are you one of the Miss Americas, a contest ant, or what?" The rather smug policeman had a bright idea: "She's Hiss Swamp Hollow," he said. "No, are you kidding me?" the fellow aaid with amaze ment. "Or what?" Miss America decided to find out just where he was from. "Are you from the North Caro lina press." she smiled. Yes, he was. "Well, that's right," she told him. "I am Miaa Swamp Hol low." He must have realized his mistake and made a quick trip out of the hallway. Then she said: "Now, if he were from out-of-state I could understand it. But if he's from North Carolina, you'd think Beautiful Homesites ?
