Doctor Talk i>y jvbh a. lunotui Heart disease todiy is the leading cause of death in Am erica and the problem of high blood pressure is one of the chief causes for heart disease. High blood pressure is most often seen in the middle-age group of people and the result ing heart impairment accounts for a large number of deaths and much disability. High blod pressure can be found to follow kidney disease, as seen in Brights Disease. At times, hypertension will be found to run in families as an hereditary factor, and in other cases blood pressure increase is seen in the overweight patient. Perhaps, one of the largest groups of hypertensive patients in this day of universal anxiety are those who can't control their "nerves," the result is generalized spasm of the art erioles of the body and result ing increase in the blood pres sure. This increase in the blood pressure, regardless of the cfcuse, exerts an increased work load on the musculature'of the; heart. The pressure must ?o up if the heart is to force the blood through the restricted or spastic arterioles, and this in creased work causes the heart muscle to enlarge and damage to the arteries usually occurs, with the vessels becoming scarred, thickened, and ineles tic (this change in. the blood vessels is referred to as scleros is or arteriosclerosis. Peristent hypertension caus es marked changes in the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys at an early stage ? those changes then can bring on a "stroke." A brain "stroke" occurs when a small artery rep tures or becomes clotted or blocked with blood. Symptoms of high blood pres sure vary, in some no symptoms are present at all; in others there may be headaches, dizzi ness, full-feeling in the head, fatigue, or general aches and pains.
