Chowan County continues to trail:

ginned up to the present time. Ac-;
cording to a report of F. W. Hobbs, I
‘ special agent for the Bureau of the
Census. 5U2 bales of cotton were, gin-:
ijed in 'Chowan County from the 1949
crop prior to November 1. which
compares with 597 hales from the
1945 crop at the same time last year.

Mrs. Katharine Rhodes
Dies At Home Daughter
Mrs. Katharine Rhodes, 84. died
Monday night at Plymouth after a
1 lingering illness, the body being
brought to the Ziegler Funeral Home,
I where it is awaiting funeral arranges
hnent, with interment scheduled to
take place in Norfolk.
' Mrs. Rhodes was the widow of
Captain Jesse T. Rhodes, remembered
by older Kdenton residents of Eden
I ton. Deceased was the mother of
I Mrs. W. 11. Clark, who for a long
I time was a resident of Edenton when
. her husband was connected with the
• peanut business, here. She had made
her horrte with her daughter in l’iy
j mouth.
Aside from her daughter, deceased
is survived by two grandsons. Col.
Lawrence Clark, in the U. S. Army,
and Walter Clark of Elizabeth Citv.

Funds Lag For Negro
Homecoming Affair

of the American Legion plans to,

war veterans on December 5. Golden;

Commander Frinks reports quite a

1947 Plan Os Work Is
Lined Up For Chow an
Plans for extension Work for 1947
in Chowan County have been com
pleted, reports C. VV. Overman, who
says the Chowan County Board of
.Agriculture felt that the main em
phasis during the year should be 4-H
club work, improvement iii the Jumbo
runner type peanut, forestry, cotton
and that the progress in sulphur dust
ing of peanuts should be continued.
Plans for 1947 have been made ac-1
cordingly, says Mr. Overman, with i
additional work on other phases of
the county’s agriculture to balance 1
the program. j

Exhibit Prize Winner;
William Pjnree, local Negro, won
first prize at the recent State Fair in •
Raleigh for a handicraft exhibit
which he made at leisure time.. The i -
display attracted considerable aiteh
tun iiv Preston's window for several ;
days and was removed early this
week.
The exhibit included a chair in a
bottle, a carved wooden plaque of
Robert K. Lee, Rock of Ages, antique
porch set , and two 16th century
rounds used in chairs at that time.
