Senator Willis Smith Selected Speaker By .Virginia Democrats s . Jefferson-Jackson' Day Dinner In Richmond y February 23rd Democrats of the State of Virginia have selected North Carolina Sena tor Willis Smith as keynote speaker for Virginia’s Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner in Richmond on February 23. The Virginians noted the fact that Senator Smith was born in Vir ginia. Smith, however, moved to North, Carolina when he was two years of age. Senator Smith’s selection was en couraged by Senator Harry F. Byrd (D.Va.) a close friends of Smith. . The Virginia speech by Senator Smith will be the top one of his ca reer since going to the Senate in 1950. Arrangements are being made for a national radio network to.carry the broadcast, according to informa tion from Richmond. The Virginia event follows by two weeks the North Carolina Jefferson- Jackson Day Dinner, at which Nat ional Democratic Chairman Frank McKinney was principal speaker. The gathering of the Democrats in ■Richmond will be at tha Hotel John Marshall. As is the case with all such party dinners, the purpose of jjthis one is to raise money for party purposes in Virginia. Last year the Virginia dinner raised almost $12,000. Tickets are $26 each. trr i ■ . . ■ — • —■ ■- Edenton High Drops Games To New Bern Both Edenton High School bas ketball teams were defeated in the Edenton gymnasium Friday night by the New Bern outfits. In the girls’ game New 'Bern walked off with a comfortable margin of 42 to 20. There was very little difference in the score of the boys’ game, the New Bern team winning by a count of 42 to 23. The locals took a 5-8 lead at the start of the game when almost four minutes of the game had elans ed before any score was made. The visitors, however, gradually pulled ahead and at no time were they ser iously threatened. A1 Owens led the Edenton scoring with six points, as many shots were missed by the Aces. *A In the girls’ game Ann Hawkins led the Acelet scoring with six ’points.
