SECTION ONE—: School Enrollment In North Carolina Highest In History Latest Figures Reveal 914,269 In School In 1951-1952 Enrollment in North Carolina’s pub lic schools continues upward, accord ing to figures for 1951-52, latest year available. Total enrollment for that year was 914,269, highest in the his tory of the State. Os this total enrollment, 720,391 were in grades 1-8 and 193,878 in grades 9-12. On a percentage basis this is 78.8 per cent elementary and 21.2 per cent high school. Enrollment in the Edenton schools for 1952-53 was 917 white and 1,047 Negro. Os the 917 in white schools, there were 361 boys and 320 girls in the elementary school and 121 boys and 115 girls in high school. In the col ored school there were 373 boys and 389 girls in the elementary school and 118 boys and 167 girls in the high school. In the Chowan County white unit 497 were enrolled, of whom 191 boys and 188 girls were enrolled in the ele mentary school and 57 boys and 61 girls in high school. In the county colored elementary schools 399 were enrolled comprising 216 boys and 183 girls. Entomologist Looks Over Peanut Projects Dr. J. R. Dogger, entomologist with the N. C. Experiment Station, was in Chowan County Thursday of last week " to work with the peanut? plots which 1 are being used as demonstrations to control the Southern root worm. He found evidence of the Southern corn root worm on the untreated area at | R. T. Harrell’s farm. No evidence of I the root worm was found on the treat ed area. The treated area at Mr. Har rell’s was treated with Heptachlor at ! the rate of 1% pounds actual material per acre. The plot at E. M. Howell’s farm was treated with Aldrin at the same rate per acre. No evidence of com root worm was found on either the treated or untreated areas at Mr. Howell’s. Rocky Hock Splits Even During Week (Continued Lorn Page One) Tuesday night. Eocky Hock weakened in the final frame and lost to the Weeksville Clodhoppers 4to 1. It was a mound duel between Vernon White and Willison, with the score tied 1-1 until the tenth inning. Weeksville the lead in the first inning when Kellv Byrum and Craig singled in succession and Byrum raced home on an error. The visitors sew ed up the game in their half of the tenth. Bright was safe on Leary’s error and C. Scott singled. Brickhouse was safe on an outfield fly and Byrum raced home. At this point Manager Palmer Tynch sent Reid to the mound to replace Willison. While Reid was winding up Scott raced home with the second run of the inning. Brickhouse scored on a passed ball. Rocky Hock was unable to score until the fifth inning and up to that time not a single man reached first base. The run was scored when El bert Bunch doubled and scored on a single by Ray Jordan. Weeksville made 10 hits, while Rocky Hock was able to chalk up on ly four. • White pitched until the ninth in ning and fanned 10 batters. In the ninth Berry went to the mound, but was replaced by Gregory after pitch ing only one ball. Willison fanned nine visiting bat ters and was replaced by Reid in the final frame with two on bases and no outs. REVIVAL ENDS FRIDAY Revival services at the Presbyterian Church are in progress this week and will end Friday night. The pastor, the Rev. James MacKenzie is preach ing for the revival.
