A treat being a spirit ' ual inventory surrounded by an atmosphere of quiet and seclus ion usally involves travel but the f Albemarle area has been blessed by the recent arrival of an out i-Standing retreatmaster, the Rev. Francis Donnellan S.S.E., as the new pastor of St. Catherine’s Church, Elizabeth City. Father Donnellan will come to Edenton and open the retreit with the first conference at 8 P. M During the Sunday afternoon conference a religious movie will be shown to the children in : the recently completed Parish Hall. - . " i Residents of Edenton and the surrounding area are invited to attend these conferences, even though they are not regular members of St. Ann’s Church, without cost or obligation. It is The National Outlook Do We Need Anti-Strike Legislation? By Ralph Robey Late last week it appeared that the steel workers would be back on the job as of now. No matter when the strike ends, however, it will be month's be fore the economy, the workers, and the companies fully recover. The hoped for ending of the * strike was the result cf the in junction obtained by the Ad ministration requiring the steel employees to return to their jobs. Under the law, sixty days after the return to work, a secret vote must be taken of the employees on the final offer of the com pan:es. If this offer is accepted, the strike is over for the dura tion of the contract. If the of fer is voted down, the strike may be resumed twenty days later. At Time Os Reconvening \ Congress * tn Shoulih-suoh resurrptiprr' of the strike occur it would. come just as the" new session bf the Congress is getting under "«ray. Th s 'Would mean that, there would: be enomfous pressure to pass Sbme kind of law to make it impossible Sir the public wel fare Jp be undermined in such a mangier. Among the suggest ions tfhich would be made ire: r 1. iJtohibit all strikes in basic industries. This is unthinkable. In thfc first place the determina tion <rf a basic industry is not eagy, and secondly, and more im portant, the right to strike is basic jjn so far as private indus try is concerned and it must not hg prohibited. 2. Provide for the appointment of fagt finding commissions, with the atrthority to make recommen dations. Fact finding commis sions''today do not have the right .2nd it should pot be given to tfigm. They do not know, and eannot find out, as much aboutjjgthe issues in a labor con troversy as the immediate par ties. iXnd unless the recommen ds tioffls are made compulsory, there is no reason to assume that |SBch power would settle the ir=i S| DIAG. For, as the name spiritual retreat im implies, if has a striking resemb lence to'an effective military tac tic. Just as in a battle retreat is sometimes the wiser course; so in one’s spir tual life it B wise at times to draw back from -the battle in order to get a clearer view of the enemy, to regroup one’s forces and plan the best strategy. A soldier fights best when he knows who, how, an dwhy he is fighting; hence the retreat conferences deal with Heaven, Hell, sin, prayer and virtues. A sincere, honest, objective look at one’s self, accompanied by fervent prayer can change the course of one’s life and obtain from God the grace to win the big gest battle of life, one’s eternal I salvation. dispute. If the recommendations are made compulsory, it means what is called compulsory arbi tration. Such arbitration is used in the interpretation of provis ions in an existing contract, but it must not be used as a genera’ method for settling labor d.s putes. 3. Give the Federal Govern ment authority to settle a strike when it has continued beyond ; specified time. This would des troy collective bargaining. Sucl settlements necessarily would b made on a political, rather thar an economic, basis. 4. Subject the unions to the anti-trust laws, or their equiva lent. This would have the ef fect of eliminating the power o' ■one person, or a small grouo of persons, to bring down a whole ihd«Btry.< < We would not -think of permitting the companies o' an industry to get together and jointly decide that on a giver day all will stop production. But that would be no worse frorr the viewpoint of public welfare than leaving with union leaders the power to strike a whole in dustry. Congress May Be Forced To Act As of the moment one has to say that the chance of the Congress eliminating this mo nopoly power of labor union chiefs is not great. But should the steel strike be resumed, and the public become aroused, it is possible that the Congress might move in this direction. Certain ly nothing else will serve as any real protection to the public from the continued and repeated monopoly actions of the pre ferred' few in the labor union movement. Beltime Story “Tell me a. story, daddy,” said the little boy. “Well my son,” began the fac tory worker, “once upon a time and a half.” THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. Remove fancy buttons, orna- i ments or trimmings, as well as | shoulder pads, before washing, i Make an outline of sweater on heavy paper or a Turkish towel before washing. Os course this is not necessary if a drying form is used. Do not soak -colored • sweaters. Wash quickly and gently by hand. Squeeze suds through sweater. Do not rub hard or .wist. Gentle action must be used particularly with woolens to avoid shrinkage. Soiled spots ■an be treated by working in some of the top suds with the Angers. Rinse thoroughly in clear, lukewarm water. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Roll sweater in Turkish towel md knead gently to remove ex cess moisture. Unroll * immediately and lay sweater en outline, stretching to size or place on drying form. Separate contrasting co’ors with dry towel inserted between back and front panels cf sweat er and then dry quickly in front as a fan or in some airy place away from heat. When entirely dry, brush angoras or other fleecy types to fluff up nap. Family Financial Planning— What is a family financial plan? It is a guide or pattern for the use of future family income. It will show, in a good organized form on paper, how expenses can be balanced, what savings can be expected, and how this extra income or savings can be used or Invested to best advan tage. The entire family should work together on it; for it is a family MAOLA ■f. . . Vital To Your Family’s Health affair since each member is af fected by the plan. A spending and saving plan will work only if there is family agreement and cooperation. Each family mem ber must make an honest effort to help develop the plan and follow the plar\ as closely as possible. This will not only help you get better living from your money, but it also will provide valuable training for your chil dren. Apples Are Easy To Freeze— Apples are easy-to-freeze items. You neither peel nor dice them —just wash, but in air-tight plastic bags and freeze. Frozen apples aren’t to be eaten raw but they’re excellent for pies, sauce, and other desserts. Cleaning Time—-Here’s another use for your dishwasher at house-cleaning time: Glass shelves can be put in the dish washer —and another tiresome cleaning task marked off your list. Clothing Storage And Groom ing Aids—To put your best foot forward, the storage of clothes and your choice of grooming aids can play an important role. This should be a never ending goal for both men and women regardless of age. Tastefully a»d immaculately dressed persons create a feel ing of poise and self-assurance wherever they go. The amount of money spent for clothing and, grooming does not necessarily -determine to C5&666 what extent one is able to | achieve a neat appearance at { home, at school, or at work. An expensive garment, if not stor ed so that the original shape is | preserved and maintained, may | be much less attractive than a less expensive one which has I been given the proper care. The storage and care provided for clothes and grooming sup plies play an important role in appearance and dress. Why not have clothes, cosmetics, and oth er grooming supplies organized in such away that d neat ap pearance will be natural at home and awy? Teachers Entertain Chowan High PTA The first and second grades, directed by Miss Ada ’Morrs, Mrs. Margaret Rountree, Miss Haslip and Miss Willoughby, en tertained the Parent-Teacher As sociation at their meeting Mon day in the Chowan High School auditorium. The second grade grcun re peated the entire 100th Psalm together and gave a musical i prayer. Songs and dances based on the autumn theme were done by both grades. The teachers and children deserve much cred it for a very well-organized pro gram under short notice. R. H. Copeland, principal of i Chowan High School, gave a short talk, expressing his appre ciation for fee unusually large attendance, requesting the par ents to make every effort possi ble to keep their children in school during the harvesting sea son and to give support to the basketball team this year. He explained that there will be 20 games this season with only two long trios necessary. The first grade had 91% at tendance of parents and Mrs. Rountree’s second grade 90%.
