Holland says in his report that catches of bluefish, tr.ackerel, mullet, flounder, spots, iron), sea mullet, and hogfish we:«t good luring the past spring. Shrimp catches for the first six months of 1962 amounted to 143,656 pounds, or 758 pounds more than the corresponding pe riod in 1961. Holland said the Institute of Fisheries Research, a unit of the University of North Carolina at Morehead City, is stepping up its research program on shrimp and that recommendations for improving this segment of the fishing industry are expected. The board’s commercial fisher ies committee has recommended the institute be given $10,00( from a special 1961 appropria ‘ion for research on shrimp. There has been a decline in production of clams and the In stitute of Fisheries Research has been asked to find out why. There was a decline in catches of soft and hard crabs. The commercial fisheries committee has recommended that $5,000 be. spent on research on clams. Scallop production, however, totaled 10,804 gallons for the six months period, or more than double that for the same period last year. All were caught in the State's sounds. Catches of finfish during the si* months totaled 22,200,000 pounds, Holland said, and 35 million menhaden, which are commercially tuluable for their jil and for use as chicken feed, were caught. Holland pointed out these figures are those of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Ser vice.
