THOMAS \ •PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Jesus knew His work on earth was finished and He would soon have to die on the cross for our sins. He took his disciples and came to a place called Geth semane. He told them to sit there while he go and pray. He took Peter, James and John and went a little further. “Watch a,nd wait here while I pray, for my soul is sorrowful,” he told them. He went and prayed and came back and found them asleep. He did this three times and each time he found them asleep. Each time His prayer was the same words. Why? The first time was for the people of the Old Testament. The sec ond was for His disciples and others while He was here on earth. The third time he pnayed * was for you and me and the babies who are still going to be born. The past, present and fu ture. You can be saved, beloved, if you only trust and accept Christ as your savior. Today is salva tion. Don’t wait. You may be dead tomorrow. You must be saved to live in the next world. Be sorry for your sins and ad mit you are a sinner. God will save you if you will call upon Him. Let your prayer be what Jesus said: “Father, all things are possible unto Thee. Take away this cup from me. Never theless, not what I will, but what Thou wilt.” St. Mark 14:36; “Os Americanism of the right sort we cannot have too much” Chowan County Churches EDENTON BAPTIST CHURCH REV. R. N. Memory Selection: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Je rusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). Lesson Texrt: Matthew 28:16-20; Acts 1:6-8; Rom. 1:8-16; 10:1-18. Today the point of our con sideration is what attitudes and strategies should be used in the church’s effort to reach people at home and abroad. It is of no great secret that there have always been, and probably always will be, those who have questioned the pro priety of the church’s missionary programs. The people who ar gue that the church has no busi ness sticking its missionary nose into the lives of other people, and those who feel that it is rather dictatorial to try to en force the concepts of Christianity upon other peoples, exist both within and without the Church. These people are, however, overlooking the fact that Christ himself charged his disciples to carry God’s Word abroad. “You Shall receive power When the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). These words were spoken to the disciples by the resurrected Christ just be-j fore his Ascension. They leave little doubt of the path to be taken —in the minds of his true followers. They would not have chosen a more dangerous time in which to spread Jesus’ teachings. Yet this did not deter them; they were motivated to share this ’tremen dous thing that had come about; it was too glorious to be kept to themselves. As members of the churches of our faith, we are disciples of Jesus. Our belief in Christ and in what he died for . . . our salvation . . . are too precious an experience not to be shared with others —especially others in far distant lands that are less fort unate than we. And we must ever bear in. mind the fact that the salvation which is available to us in Christ can only be retained through sharing. This is one of the fundamental laws. Noth ing continues to exist if it is not fulfilling its purpose. Salvation is not for a chosen few—it is for everybody. It is therefore the duty of the church (and of the congregation of that church) to spread the Word, and to be living witnesses for Christ. America is singularly blessed in this regard; we have knowledge of Christ—which other people gave to us. We therefore have no right to withhold it from other less fortunate people, es pecially bearing in mind the fact that we have had a command from Jesus to spread his Word. (Matthew 28:19). The religion that begins at 1 home is fine . . . but a religion that ends at home is its own death warrant. Jesus never won all the people in one place be fore he won some ill another.
