Tuesday’s discussion was on “The Problem of School Dropout and Its Jmplications for Economic, Social and Education Growth and Opportunities”; THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTOH. NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY. JULY 2. 1964. Wednesday: “Job Training Op portunities and Their' Implica tions for Youth Development”; Thursday: “Exploring and Choos ing Careers for a Changing So ciety”; Friday: “Some Charac teristics of a Good Community and Their Implications for Youth Development.” Delegates attend ing 4-H Club week will give some background information on these topics and some conclus ions reached by the groups, j Three of the delegates will ap- Ipear on radio today (Thursday).! I W. O. Conrad, Chairman of ’ ‘Human Relations Committee in Greensboro, ‘was guest speaker at the morning assembly Tues day. He told the group “that all inhibitions of the past are being wiped away and that op opportunities will be available to those Who are prepared, re gardless of race or creed. The color of your skin can be a badge of honor if you accept the challenge 'to be the best.” Speaking on “The Challenge” he. said, “the challenge which stands before you now is the j challenge of excellence and l those who are willing to settle for less than the best will fall behind.” He urged “be the best, do a little more than is expected of you in preparing for life’s work.” I Mrs. Sarah W. Herbin, employ ment service representative, the Governor’s Office, Italeigh, an other assembly speaker, pointed out the importance of preparing for and top performance on the job. Speaking on “Total Per formance,” she said, “the future before you is so much brightei than ever before in history, tha' you must prepare now, as neve before to be ready for it." Oth er speakers were R. E Jones, Extension State Agent, whe pointed up the importance of ed ucation in the nation’s economy I [and he said, “the student whi I I drops out of school before hf 1 graduates from high school i: I committing personal, social and I economic suicide.” Mrs. M. M.j Brown, Assistant State Home Economics Agent, spoke on “Family Unity and the values that should be instilled in indi viduals at home. In their welcome to the 4-H delegates, Mrs. Pauline E. Moore and W. C. Cooper, Extension District 41H Club Agents, said “We are able to be present in this 1964 4-H Club Week due to an educational program for the common man. We 'have two im portant Charges to keep: (1) The (charge of the heritage which has ' left so much to us; and (2) The 'charge of the challenges of the 'future which will demand so much of us.” At this Golden | Anniversary year of the Coop 'erates Agricultural Extension, we i were provided at 4-H Club 'Week, learning for living. Bonner Gives Flag To Chowan College Chowan College has received an American flag purchased and given by the Hon. Herbert C. Bonner and subsequently flown over the United States capitol. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, presi dent of the college, has an-| nounced receipt of the flag giv en by Congressman Bonner | which has • been flown over the nation’s capitol. The certifica-1 tion of the latter fact was made by J. George Stewart, architect of the capitol. A flag pole will be erected on the campus and the, flag will be flown regularly and specifically on special occasions.
