Wasps Problem This Time of Year Home Agent Suggests Method to Get (m Os Pests % “Wasps are a comi*ya(iprob lem this time of 'yeay ijy Cho -1 wan County,” states Miss .Paul ine Callaway, Home JScoßbmics Extension Agent. They build their nests in and around homes beneath eaves, on porches, behind shutters, in trees and shrubbery. .An#soon er or later someone gets stung. Entomologists of thfr U. S. De partment of Agriculture say it’s difficult to discourage these in sects once they’ve decided to set up housekeeping. But it can be done with the persistent appli cation of the proper insecticide. Just follow the directions on the label. Chlordane, dieldrin and DpT are effective for this purpose. So are most.aerosol bombs rec ommended for ant and roach control. Go after the wasps at night when they are less active and most of them are in their nests. Apply the insecticide directly to the nests. ' Or it may be possible to dis lodge hornets’ and yellow jack ets’ nests and dispose of them in Maola's having a j Fruitpa if | J A fresh fruit festival of ice | | cream flavors, featuring Fresh 1 Banana, Strawberries ’N Cream, I and Fresh Peach. But before, you go pok ing around, plug the opening of the nest with absorbent cotton that has been soaked in chloro form or carbon •tetrachloride.; The fumes will stun the insects inside and you can work with less danger of being stung. Remove the nest quickly. Burn or bury it. Or put it into a can containing a few table spoons of chloroform or carbon tetrachloride and seal the can tightly. You probably won’t be able to get all the wasps the first time. Any that escape will immediate ly begin to rebuild their nest near the original site. Often, other wasps will replace the or iginal colony. Removing the nests, spraying or dusting will eventually dis courage all comers, the entomo logists say.
