Commission forces complet
ed work on 8.55 miles of
roads in the First Division
during the month of July,
acc.ording, to Commissioner
Don Matthews, Jr., and Di
vision Engineer D. W. Pat
rick. Work was completed
in five counties: Chowan,
Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell ana
W ashington.
In Chowan County: 0.2
mile of grade and paving
was placed on SR 1109
(DARF Plant Road).
In Hyde County: 1.8 miles
of grade -md stabilize was
placed on SR 1125 (Maple
town Road). 0.25 mile of
grade and stabilize was plac
ed on Hyde County School

In Tyrrell County: 3.0
miles of finish base and
paving was placed on SR
1307 (Frying Pan Road).
In Washington County: 3.3
miles of finish base and
paving was placed on SR
1231 (Woodlawn Read) and
SR 1303 (Back Road).

Considerable time was
spent in the Court House
when three Chowan County
watermelon growers were
hailed before representatives
of the AAA for alleged vio
lation of the watermelon
marketing agrt I nent. The
three growers were L. A.
Bunch, W. G. Forehand and
R. N. Privott.
Funeral services were held
for Nellie Horne, who met a
horrible death when, as she
i was at work at the Edenton
Cotton Mill, her husband,
John Horne, virtually cut
off her head with a razor.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert
Leary were in Seattle, Wash.,
on a motor trip across the
continent. While there the
bodies of Will Rogers and
W T iley Post arrived from
Alasxa.
A valuable silver vase was
stolen from the Edenton
Methodist Church and ef
forts failed to recover the
vase.
Asa Griffin entertained
members of the Red Men
degree team at one of his
tobacco barns in the Cow
pen Neck section.
Mrs. Z. W. Evans gave a
lovely dinner party in honor
of her husband’s 74th birth
day.
Town Council offered a
site 110x110 feet on the fair
grounds to the State of
North Carolina for use in
construction of an armory.
A two-weeks-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sutten
field died at the home of his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. A. Webb, in the Yeopim
section.

Dr. Walter A. Leggett,
senior member of Leggett &
Davis Drug Store, retired
from business and sold his
interest in the concern to J.
W. Davis, who continued to
operate under the same
name.
Cpl. Noah Goodwin, Jr.,
was awarded the Purple
Heart for .injuries sustained
in battle during fighting in
the European Theater of
Operations.
Capt. Harry L. Turner was
awarded the Silver Star

Town Council granted per
mission to Chief of Police
George I. Dail to hold a
police ball with profits of
the affair to go toward pur
chasing radio equipment
which was to include a
transmitter and receiver.
Due to a problem caused
by bicycles, Town Council
voted to charge an annual
license fee of 25 cents for
each bicycle in Edenton.
Speaking at a Rotary Club
meeting, John Fletcher spoke
about Edenton's opportunity
to share in the lucrative,
tourist business now that the
war was over and people
would be able to travel.
Though blocked in the
purchase of land upon which
to build a teacherage at
Chowan High School, the
County Board of Education
decided to erect the build
ing on present school prop
erty, using what was the
athletic field.
Town Council unanimous
ly approved a suggestion to
secure equipment and train
a group to aid in saving or
recovering drowning bodies.
Chowan County’s Draft
Board received a bulletin
from state headquarters
\\ hich announced that up to
the present there had been
no change in registration of
ycung men becoming 18
years of age.
John A. Garrett, 60, died
suddenly of a heart attack
near the Norfolk Southern
Bus Station while he was
doing some work on his
motorcycle.
