\'» * r SECTION TWO ' ... WHborne Haiwß n> - Roundup Some birds, like some hu mans, must have a streak of meanness in their makeup. Some are bullies. 1 have been throwing 'ottt bread crumbs for my feathered friends, and there is ohe big bird who tries to hog It all, and does his best to SSMve the other, much smaller, birds away. But the small Chowan Exceeds *65 Bond Quota Chowan was among .35 North Carolina counties which made 100 per cent of their annual Savings Bonds goals for 1965. R. Graham White, local Volunteer chairman, , said sales in December, 1965, amounted to $4,035, bringing the coun ty’s sales total for the .year to $64,581, which is 143.8 per cent of the annual quota of $74,340, North Carolinians increas ed their purchase of 4J. S. Savings Bonds in December by nearly 6 per cent over December, 1964. This brought Bond sales for 1965 to $51,982,887, which was the highest volume of combined Series E and H Bond sales in the past 10 years. Series E Bond sales totaled $49,891,387 for the year, which was the highest sales lor this series since 1947. While th<v state was estab lishing these new records in the sale of U. S. Savings Bonds, it fell short of its 1965 quota of $53,100,00. Sales amounted to nearly 98 per cent of the state's quota for last year. “We are highly . pleased with the Savings Bonds sales volume in North Carolina in 1965 and we feel that it. is a particularly outstanding retard since wc were in a most competitive market for the sayings dollar,”, said W. H. Andrews,. Jr., volunteer state chairman. “The Savings Bonds Pro gram, achieved 100 per cent of all. its other assignments iq Payroll Savings promotion, wro r e thajn :22;t)00 new savers were added to the Payroll Sav ings Plan, and our state con tinues to bic a leader in the amount of support devoted to the Savings Bonds, promo tion by news arid advertis ing media.-. Otherwise I might be tempt ed to do something about this fine-feathered bully. Week before last, I opened this column with a quote from Emerson: “Announced by all the trumpets of the sky, arrives the snow.” We’d had a little flurry of snow, and I prematurely jumped the gun. I also wrote a qua train about the snow, which would be more appropos now, but I’ll not bore you by repeating it. Suffice to say, it inadequately expressed what we are experiencing now, in the way of one of the worst snow storms in years. My Stetson is off to the paper carrier boys, who like the mail man, braves the worst kind of weather to bring us our morning paper. I haven’t missed getting my paper a single morning yet. Frankly, there were a few mornings when I wished he’d had the gumption to stay home and let the papers go hang.
