Community Development— Community development is designed to promote and en coiipagp community action and effort that will enable progressive minded families qnd leaders, living in that community, to pool their in terests to develop and main tain a useful admirable com munity. This is proposed to t>e done by utilizing both hu man and material resources that will provide more op portunities for economic, home, .community and youth development. ■ Thirtepn communities in Chowan County organized and participated in the coun ty contest for 1965. Two communities participated in the Albemarle area 10-county contest. Some of the pro jects worked on in varying degrees by community de velopment organizations in cluded; Stressing increased' crop yields, livestock produc tion and industrial develon ment for increased family income; the beautification of the home surroundings and improved environment for a more attractive community and better family relations and living; building and im proving community centers and facilities that can be re alized ’from cooperative ef forts which may not be pos sible otherwise, and provid ing opportunities for youth development through organ ized groups, more active par ticipation in church pro- I*. How ever, ,in telling their stories to the judges, all communi ties expressed a feeling that their accomplishments was an indication of their winning regardless of how they were placed by the judges. Area Development The Albemarle Area Develqpment Association’ (AADA) is com posed of the 10 cour.lies of Hyde, Tyrrell, Washington, Hare, Currituck, Camden, Chowan, Pasquotank, Per quimans and Gates. The objectives of the AADA is to develop both the area and the individual counties. The work is promoted by the following committees: Agriculture, Community De velopment, Economic Oppor tunity Development, Fine Arts and Crafts, Industry and Travel and Recreation. Your Extension workers aided Chowan County in this co operative effort. Some of the activities and accomplish ments during 1965 were as 'ollows: Agriculture—The area ag ricultural committee pro moted the market hog show and sale in February. In August a farm shop and ma chinery storage tour was held. The concentrated soil testing drive was conducted September - December. The area feeder calf sale was held in October. Chowan County people participated in all of these. Community Development— Chowan, with six other counties, participated and County News By MIJB. North Carolina Little Sym phony Orchestra has placed Edenton on the symphony’s ilst annual tour. John A. Holmes High School audi torium will be the site of the March 19 concert. Rev. Hubert S. Morris, minister of youth at Central Assembly of God here at Edenton since May, 1965, has accepted the pastorate of the Edenton Assembly of God Church, effective January 6. He succeeds Rev. C. L. Wiles as pastor. David Lee Hollowell of Tyner is representing Cho wan County at the Modern Farming Short Course now under way at North Caro lina State University in Ra leigh. This is sponsored by Peoples Bank & Trust Com pany. New additions to North Carolina Public Library’s film collection will be shown Wednesday, February 9 be tween 9:30 A. M. and 4 P. M. in the auditorium of the Edenton Municipal Build ing. The program is open and free of charge to anyone who wishes to attend. H. V. Anderson, audio - visual con sultant at N. C. State Li brary in Raleigh will be on hand to answer questions. Lloyd C. Bunch, local soil and water conservation dis trict supervisor, was elected first vice president of the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conserva tion Districts for 1966 at the annual meeting held recent ly in Asheville. The Bear Swamp water shed project gets approval by James D. Bellamy and his committee. Marion Kirby has been elevated to head football coach at John A. Holmes High School and David T. Bumgarner , has been em ployed as his assistant. The Chowan Arts Council is sponsoring George Weig and of East Carolina College, who will be here February 3 to talk to those interested in guitar lessons. The meeting will be held at 7:30 P. M. at St. Paul’s Parish House. February is designated as Heart Month throughout the country. Give a contribu tion for the Heart Fund. were judged in area com petition. The airman, a grad uate of John A.i Holmes High School, recently completed frainipg at Lacklapd AFB, Texas. Stadium Drive Now Underway WINSTON-SALEM Ray S. Jones of 1209 Pryor Street, Elizabeth City, has been named chairman of a six county area in the coming drive to raise $2 M: million for a new football stadium for Wake Forest College. The goal for the area is $19,000. i Counties which Jones will canvass and their goals are: Camden, Currituck and Pas quotank, combined goal of $1\1,000; and Cfypwan, Gates and .Perquimans, a combined gotil of SB,OOO. . Dan Moore, is co-chair man. The drive for special gifts ■will begin in late February. Bennett said he hopes to Wind up the campaign in the Mate and nation by April 5. Medicare kits, including ap enrollment card for the medical insurance plan, were sent during the fall to tpe 1514 million social security and railroad retirement bene ficiaries 65 or oyer. Aboqt two-thirds of these people have sent back their cards, and 90 per-cept have check ed “Yes” for medical insur ance under Medicare. “In North Carolina,” Thom ts F. Wyatt, social security district manager in Green ville, said today, “292,306 people received Medicare kits and enrollment cards last fall. As of the first week in January, 154,706 had sign ed up for the supplementary medical insurance plan. “Many of the people who have not signed up may not understand how the plan will work and what it offers.” he added. “The letter going out from social security headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, this week should answer some of their ques tions.” Enclosed with this second letter Is another enrollment card in case they lost the first one or sent it in marked “No", and have since chang ed their minds. “For people now 65 or over,” he emphasized, “there is a deadline for signing up for the supplementary medi cal insurance plan. If your coverage is to begin as soon as the Medicare program goes into effect, you have to be enrolled by March 31, 1966. “The medical insurance program, like the basic hos pital insurance plan, will go into effect beginning July Ist.
