AT AREA MEETlNG—Volunteers ;n the Northeast Corner of North Carolina drive to raise $150,000 in the Raleigh Diocese of the Catholic Church met recently in Hertford. Standing, left to right are: Frank Palumbo of Edenton, Herbert Armstrong, Jr., Herman Mullen, Jr„ and Dudley Sims, all of Elizabeth City. Seated are: A. R. Rutz of Elizabeth City; Father Joseph J. Lash, pastor of St Ann’s Catholic Church in Edenton and area director; Mai. Edward Gainor, a supernumerary of St. Ann’s; and Father Joseph Klaus of Kill Devil Hills, pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish. Discuss Drive Area Catholics Following the format laid down at a meeting of the pastors and theiir re spective co-chairman rep resenting the Northeast corner of North Carolina, the Catholics will be brief ed as to how they can better help in this very worthy project. The meeting was held at the Hertford Adminis tration Building, thanks to Mayor V. N. Darden, this past Wednesday night. All those present felt that the needs of the diocese are truly deserving of everyone’s fullest coopera tion. Father Joseph J. Lash pointed out that the goal this year is the same as it was the previous three years, $150,000. He stress ed the fact that with the combined efforts of all the Catholics in the diocese the round number poten tial would not be impos sible to achieve. Pointing out that if all the parishes and missions throughout the diocese would do as well as the one over which he is in charge down in Columbia, the sum of $375,000 would be realized. The reason for this is because of the results produced by the seven units at All Souls' in Columbia last year. These people came for ward with sl6l, only sl4 less a perfect return. The so - called budget pie is divided into the following percentages: 43 per cent or $65,000 to be allotted toward the ser vice to Catholic students on secular campuses, be ginning wiith that of the University ol North Caro lina in Chapel Hill; 27 per cent or $40,000 for help ing nuns teach Catechism to children in isolated areas; 13 per cent or $20,000 for social ser vices; 12 per cent or $17,500 for operation costs of a pre-seminary in Ashe ville, and 5 per cent or $7,500 for Christian Doc trine Operations. The above budget-pie is the goal desired to be reached through the joint efforts of all the pastors, co-chairmen and especial ly the volunteers who will do the leg work come March 5, and each wage earner greets their assign ed volunteer with an en velope with the requested $25 donation. If the diocesan goal is realized, the old axiom of “nothing beats success like success” will prove the ef forts of all the parish vol unteers to be close to perfect. In round numbers the potential of St. Ann’s is SI,OOO. This amount may seem small alongside of the total diocesan goal of $150,000 but it will truly make the difference when placed on top of the BIG NEWS! FOR Progressive Historic Edenton, N. C.
