THOMPSON 1 County Extension Chairman If you have grain storage on your farm, now is a good time to start cleaning it up for storage this fall as it’s only a few weeks until corn harvest will begin. The first thing that should be done is for the bins to be cleaned thoroughly. Then spray the walls, floor and ceiling with 3 per cent E. C. Malathion at the rate of one per cent to three gallons of water or Methoxychlor E. C. at the rate of one quart to three gallons of water. This will take care of the eggs of insects that is left over from the previous years. There are chemicals that can be- applied around the bin that will control the grass and weeds that .tend to flourish. Some of these chemicals will last for as long as two years. There are fields that are in the feed grain program that could be sampled now with the oppor tunity to get lime out in Sep tember of October that would be of real benefit next spring. The aoil testing lab can run the test and get the results back in a few days so that whatever is needed for fall application could be done. Think about fall soil sampling as a possible time saver. The hog cholera quarantine is still in effect in certain parts of Chowan County. The procedures for marketing these hogs in the quarantine area is still the same where by they have to be inspected by a state or federal veter inarian. The r-equest for in spection should be made two days ahead of the day you plan to sale. If you have questions con cerning the procedure tor marketing hogs contact your Ccunty Extension Agent. Camden Teacher Takes COA Job William L. Roper has been named as the assistant direc tor of adult education at Col lege of the Albemarle. Roper has been a teacher in the Camden High School for the past nine years and brings to his new job a broad background in educa tion and community service. He presently serves as exeu tive officer of Coast Guard Aviation 'Unit No. OR-TUAV; is secretary of the Camden Lions Club, and is a member of the governing board of the Camden Methodist Church.
