Page 2-A HOOTS A MONUMENT TO KATHLEEN—The Nor thwestern Regional Library board of trustees held a banquet in honor of the retirement of their founding director Kathleen Gilleland on Friday of last week. Librarians and other friends from all over the state, 160 of us, gathered at the High Meadows Inn in Roaring Gap to pay tribute to a pioneer in regional library service for rural North Carolinians. I used a day of vacation to be among them since my admiration for her extends back to my first contacts with her ten years ago when I was working in Pack Memorial Library in Asheville. She was active in the Western North Carolina Librarians organization and, if I’m not mistaken, she and Bill Hess were the first two regional library directors I ever met. The souvenir program was entitled “A Monument To Kathleen Gille land” and featured a picture of the impressive headquarters building in Elkin on the cover. A listing of her accomplishments and a capsule history of the regional library were among the contents of the attractive leaflet. Starting in 1959 (four years later than the Pettigrew Region which was founded in 1955) with three counties, the Nor thwestern Regional Library qpw serves a population of ip?,962 located in Surry, Alleghany, Stokes and Yadkin counties. During Kathleen’s 17 years as Regional Director, new buildings were built, the book collection reached 171,420 volumes, innovative projects were successfully launched, book circulation reached 380,692 last year, and the staff expanded to include eight professional librarians. iShort speeches were made by several of the guests present, beginning with a charming personal history delivered by Kathleen’s nephew. A staff member, Hester Jackson, described what it was like to work for Kathleen who was not really a slave driver—she just got more work out of people for less money than anyone else could. It was especially nice to see and hear Elaine von Oesen again. She retired several months ago as assistant State Librarian and made the best speech of all in which she claimed to feel like St. Peter, standing at the gate and welcoming Kathleen into the Heaven of Retirement. SCREECHES LONG-AWAITED PRI VILEGE—The new State Librarian, David McKay, is scheduled to make the major speech at the three-day workshop for librarians to be held in Winston-Salem this week. The position of State Librarian has been vacant since the death of my good friend Phil Ogilvie in January and there has been much speculation about new directions for library ser vice in the state. The workshop is titled (significantly, I think) “Serving the Entire Com munity” and the Pettigrew Regional Library will be well represented. Tyrrell County Librarian Frances Sexton, Washington County Librarian Kim Varin and Lou Moore from Chowan County will attend in ad dition to the Regional Director. As a gesture of good neighborliness, our staff is sharing-the-ride with Mrs. Addie Keegan from the Perquimans County library in Hertford so that she can participate in this event.
