Thursday, November 22, »tf7<» ggy TEACHING TEACHERS Handwriting was one of the various types of In-Service Workshops provided for Edenton- Chowan’s K-6 teachers recently. Mike Gregory, left, a representative of the Zaner-Bloser Professional Handwriting Consultant Service, impressed upon teachers that writing is a learned skill, the proper teaching of which takes time and drill, just as in other subject areas. As he involved Mrs. Ruby Bond, Third Grade teacher at D. F. Walker School, right, in one of his demonstrations of handwriting techniques, Gregory pointed out to the fifty-one teachers that writing is a multi sensory learning process which begins with a child’s readiness by kindergarten age. Motor skills and knowledge of directional terms and shapes play an important part in a child’s ability to learn writing. Following the mastery of manuscript ([Minting) which a child first learns, there is a crucial transitional teaching process, usually near the end of the Second Grade, which leads to the correct learning of cursive (real, in a child’s vernacular) writing. Drunk Driver Also Faces Perjury Charge A jury in Chowan County Superior Court last week found Wayland L. White, Jr., guilty of drunk driving. White also faces charges of perjury. Judge N.B. Barefoot of Wilmington continued prayer for judgment and ordered White to undergo a mental examination to determine his fitness to stand trial on the second count. Wendell Perry, in court for judgment on five cases heard in a previous term of court, was sentenced to from six to eight years. In other cases not previously reported, the following action was taken: Mark Allen, manufacture marijuana and breaking and entering, mental examination ordered. Parrish of Edenton, pointed out. He said a Farm Bureau membership campaign is now underway in the county which offers the farmer a real voice in shaping his own future. Parrish said the strength and effectiveness of Farm Bureau lie in its policy development process. “This suspended upon payment of SIOO fine and costs. Ada Holly Leary, larceny, 12 to 16 months. Farmers at the local level decide for themselves on those things they are for or against. Once these facts are known, all members can work together to accomplish these goals. In other words, Farm Bureau provides the framework through which farmers can work for their own benefit.” Parrish said no one is better qualified to “speak for farmers” than farmers themselves. “Farm Bureau maintains a legislative staff in both Raleigh and Washington that works to see that the policies of its members are properly THE CHOWAN HERALD revoked and reckless driving after drinking, three to five months. County legislative committees provide far mers the opportunity for direct contact with their senators and represen tatives.” Parrish, who said the county Farm Bureau has a goal of adding 200 new members this year, pointed out that by working through their marketing asociation, members have the op portunity to improve their marketing opportunities in a number of commodity areas. He said that in all major commodity areas there are active committees which make studies, draw up recommendations, and work to help solve the special problems of the particular producers. According to Parrish, when a farmer joins Farm Bureau he also becomes eligible for a number of services, including estate planning consultation and participation in a property identification plan and theft reward program to help safeguard their property. “I urge all farmers to give serious consideration to joining Farm Bureau during 1979 membership cam paign,” Parrish said. “By doing so, they will become part of a strong and in fluential team working on issues directly affecting them.” Centralized School Menus Centralized breakfast and luncheon menus in cafeterias of Edenton- Chowan Schools for the next week include: Friday Holiday.
