Thursday, July 17. 1980 Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins Dr. Jenkins Is Elected GREENSBORO Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City State University, has been, elected to a three-year term on the N.C. Humanities Committee, beginning July 1. The appointment was announced this week by R. Oakley Winters executive director. The Humanities Com mittee encourages and supports programs drawing upon the humanities - history, literature, philosophy, comparative religions and other areas - to examine and illuminate problems and dimensions of life and culture. Utilizing federal monies made available by the National Endowment for the Humanities and gifts from private sources in North Carolina, the Committee makes grants to non-profit organizations for public education programs in the humanities. A native of Selma, Dr. Jenkins became vice chancellor at ECSU in 1977. Prior to that time he was a professor of biology. He is a graduate of ECSU and received a Ph. D. in science education from Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind. He is a member of the N.C. Health Manpower Development Council. His research and development efforts on behalf of audio tutorial, individualized instruction have received attention throughout the southeastern United States. Dr. Jenkins, resides with his wife, and three children on Parkview Drive in Elizabeth City. Birth Announcement MICHAEL ALAN SMITH Mr. and Mrs. James Larry Smith announce the birth of a son, Michael Alan, born June 29 in Chowan Hospital. The maternal grandparents are Wiliam A. Sexton, Jr., of Greenville, and Mrs. Maybelle P. Sexton of Edenton; paternal grandmother is Mrs. Adrien J. Smith, Jr., of Edenton; and paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Smith, Sr., of Hertford. Cadet Dillard Receives Training FORT BRAGG - Cadet Lorraine A. Dillard, daughter of Mr. aftd Mrs. Jimmy R. Dillard, Route 1, EdentoiA is receiving practical work in military leadership at the Army ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Bragg. The six-week training includes instruction in first aid, communications, marksmanship, orien teering, weapons, weapons systems, defensive and offensive tactics, recondo techniques and numerous other areas. Most cadets are fulfilling their advanced camp requirement during the summer between their junior and senior years in college. The successful completion of the advanced camp and graduation from their respective college or university will result in the student being commissioned a second lietuenant in the Active Army or the U.S. Army Reserve or National Guard. A 1977 graduate of Chowan High School at Tyner, the cadet is a student at St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh.
