Methodists Will Elect New Bishop LAKE JUNALUSKA Eastern North Carolina United Metodists will find out who their new bishop will be at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference here, July 15-19. Forty-two eastern N. C. United Methodist are among the 660 lay and clergy delegates from nine southeastern states attending the con ference, held every fourth year. In addition to electing and assigning the bishops in the Southeast, the conference will elect representatives to national agencies, hear reports, (dan for ministries in the coming four years and adopt a budget. Bishop Robert M. Black State Minimum Wages Up To $2.90 Per Hour North Carolina’s minimum wages went up to $2.90 an hour July 1, N.C. Labor Commissioner John C. Brooks noted today. The base wage had been $2.75 since passage of the 1979 N.C. Wage and Hour Act just a year ago. A provision in that law had assured Tuesday’s 15 cents an-hour hike, Brooks said. A subminimum wage also in effect for the past year - $2.45 an hour for full-time students, learners, ap prentices and messengers - will move to $2.60 on Tuesday. S. The conference’s new bishop could be one of the three persons elected at Jurisdictional Conference to fill positions of three retiring bishops. United Methodists in eastern N. C. are hoping that one of their own will be elected to fill one of the three openings for bishop. The N. C. Conference, meeting June 2-5 in Fayetteville, officially nominated Rev. Wallace H. Kirby of Raleigh, as their nominee. parallel the increase in the overall state minimum. The state labor com missioner is authorized under the wage and hour law to change the student minimum after holding a public hearing. The department conducted a hearing in Raleigh on June 17. Brooks said that, in general, the state minimum applies to state and local government employees and to non-exempt employees in small retail establishments which have a gross income under $275,000 annually and which employ four or more workers.
