Pearl Harbor be gan World War II for the United States, the dropping of nuclear bombs oh Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended it. The dropping of the bombs on August 6 and August 14, 1945 are indeed days exemplified by Webster’s definition of “infamy.” Those who survived will never forget the blinding light and the mushroom cloud, and the path of killed, obliterated and wounded left. It happ pened once, it happened to them, and : it can happen again... to us... to the entire world. Schedule Meeting Two additional meetings within the 11-county Elizabeth City District of the United Methodist Church have been scheduled by Dist. Supt. Hermit Braswell to help explain some of the finances of the church. The world-wide General Conference of the Methodist Church, which met in In dianapolis last year, ap proved a new pension plan for ministers which is to take effect January 1, 1982. Most of the meeting will deal with' the financial structure' tit the new {dan, what it involves, how it was arrived it and bow it affects the local church. Also on the agenda for the meetings is a look at the propoibd budget for the North Carolina Conference, of which the Elizabeth City District is fc member. The first of the two meetings will be August 10 at 8 P.M. at Ahoskie United Methpdist . Church for churches in the western portion of the District. The othisr meeting, for churches in the eastern portion of the District was in f!itv :inH Mary Sawyer - Missy Un derkofler. Mens doubles: Jerry Downum • Allen Harless; Joey Towe - Bobby Ashley; Mike Lee - Mike Spear; Kermit Nixon - James Wrighton; Mark Noneman - Craig Stepney. A Mixed Doubles Tour nament will be held in Edenton on August 8 and 9 with an open class and a 35- and-older class. Deadline to enter is August 6 at 12:00 noon. For further in formation or entry, contact Brenda Spruill or Allen Harless. At this infamous an niversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb, everyone should ponder some hard questions. Is nuclear war inevitable? What can be done to prevent it? Is our foreign policy consistent with nuclear non proliferation? What would be the consequences of nuclear war, limited and - or full-scale? These are not easy questions, but com placency is not a real an swer. If we want to live, and allow our children to live, it is up to us to meet the challenges these questions present. All the good causes that we can work for are overshadowed by the an nihilation of mankind by nuclear war. Life as we know it is in jeopardy. Are we doing anything about it? Sincerely, Jane Mabry Williams attracted nearly 150 Methodists. Churches in the 11-county District have more than 12,500 members. The churches are located in the following counties: Hert ford, Washington, Dare, Bertie, Perquimans,* Chowan, Tyrrell, Currituck, Pasquotank, Gates and Hyde. Letter To Herald Editor I think its time that the parents from the northern end of the county got together. We drove 792 miles - round-trip to Edenton this gumnler for ball games. npj..counting the playoffs and the time we arrive at the ball parks to find out the game was rained out. Its stupid for all the Little League players to play in Edenton. It should be divided, half of the games in Edenton, the other half at Chowan Jr. High. The space is there if the parents would update it. And yes I had much rather stayed at home this summer working in the garden instead of going to the ballgames. But I believe all parents should back their children. I only hope that our girls will realize how little this Maritime Bil Is Passed WASHINGTON. D. C. The House of Represen tatives July 27 passed H. R. 4074, legislation to transfer the Maritime Ad ministration to the Department of Trans portation from the Department of Commerce, where it is currently located. The Maritime Ad ministration is the federal agency which is responsible for those programs which aid in the development, promotion and operation of the United States Merchant Marine. The bill, sponsored by Reps. Walter B. Jones, Mario Biaggi, Gene Snyder, and Paul McCloskey, was unanimously reported by the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee on July 9. The President had requested the transfer, and there has been widespread support for the move throughout the ad ministration and Congress. The House adopted a committee amendment which clarifies the role the Director of the Office of Management and Budget will play in the transfer. He will serve as a mediator for 60 days in any disputes which might arise during the transfer. The cost of the transfer is estimated at $600,000, but these funds will be borne by the general authorization for the •'Hme Administration. THE CHOWAN HERALD county has to offer so when they have children they will live in an updated area. Maybe they won’t be told M “its iust hearsay.” .even when the facts are there. HobbsviUe, N. C.
