Ashley Swain, Com- ' mander of American Legion Post No. 40, Edenton, N.C. has announced the selection of the delegates for the 1962 session of The American Legion Department of North Carolina’s Annual Tar Heel Boys’ State. Selected for the six - day intensive workshop in state government and politics from John A. Holmes High School were: Albert (Butch) Everson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Everson; Eric Strothers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis F. Strother; Jay Gibson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gibson; Marvin Baccus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Baccus; Darren Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn H. Perry; Kenneth Valentine, son of Ms. Louise Holley; John McClure, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ray McClure; Chris Rankins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Rankins and Carey Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Parker. Boys’ State Delegates participate in a variety of activities which are designed to improve their awareness and un derstanding of (a) the organization and operations of government and politics in North Carolina and (b) major areas of state public policies which are being debated currently in North Carolina. The objective of Boys’ State is to improve citizenship for future and present generations of Tar Heels. Candidates for Boys’ State are carefully screened for those boys with out standing qualities, including leadership, character, schlorship and service. North Carolina, Thursday, May 20, 1982 HOLMES FFA TEAM PLACES THIRD IN COM PETITION At the FFA Livestock Judging Contest held recently in Williamston, Wayne Jernigan, Jeff Toppin, Paul Lane and Mike Pippins took another honor for John A. Holmes High School. Competing against FFA teams from eleven other schools, the local team’s win placed them 3rd in the Federation and sth in District competition. Points were earned by the students as they judged in three livestock classes - breeding swine, market swine and market and breeding cattle. Students are well prepared for competition by Eugene Rascoe, their instructor, who through class studies and field trips sees that necessary knowledge and skills for judging are learned.
