Students are scheduled to report to the Early Col lege Aug. 7 — three weeks earlier than their counter parts at the district’s other schools. About 50 students are expected in the Early College’s inaugural class. The new high school is housed in Building C on the main campus of Col lege of The Albemarle, and COA officials have been working to get the facili ties ready for ECPPS’ new school. “The rooms and offices for the Early College are basically ready,” said Lisa Johnson, spokeswoman for College of The Albe marle. “There is some furniture to move, but the only remaining construc tion item is the equipment which goes in the food ser vice area - this still needs to be hooked up. The plumbing is complete, but the plumber must return and complete the connec tions to the sinks. A couple of new electrical connec tions need to be installed for the hot and cold serv ing units.” As the new school moves forward the early college enrollment is expected not to exceed 250 students. Ex ceeding that limit would re quire prior written permis sion from COAs president. The classes will be a combination of regular high school classes and college classes. According to a memo randum of understanding between COA and ECPPS the student body will con sist of students “who have demonstrated that they are academically capable to enroll in the 9th grade and complete an associate’s de gree or two years of college credit.” Boys and Girls Club learn skills at Camp Challenge BY SUSAN BROTHERS For the Chowan Herald Five Boys and Girls Club members attended a weeklong camp in June located at YMCA Camp Weaver in Greensboro. Hol mes High school student attended the 2017 North Carolina Soil & Water Resource Conservation Workshop. John D. Par rish, III, (Trey) son of John (Jay) and Felicia Parrish of Rocky Hock represented the Chowan Soil & Water District. This event is spon sored each summer by the NC Association of Soil & Water Districts. The work shop is held on the campus of NC State University the week of June 25 through the 30,2017. Along with class room studies most of the classes are outdoor field trips to various sites in the area At the end of the week there is an examination and award ceremony which are usu ally college scholarships. The primary objective is learning about the natural resources and its manage ment in today’s environ ment. The Chowan Soil and Water District office would like to thank the Chowan- Edenton Optimist Club their contribution in send ing Trey to the Resource Conservation Workshop.
