THURSDAY, JULY 4 July 4th celebration The Edenton Tea Party Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, invites the public to attend a July 4th celebra tion at 10 a.m. at the Joseph Hewes monument on the Courthouse Green, Edenton. Hood Ellis will give a biography of Hewes. Edenton Mayor Roland H. Vaughan will read the Declaration of Indepen dence. Ail are welcome. Fabulous Fourth of July The Chowan-Edenton Opti mist Club will host the 40th annual Fabulous Fourth of July in downtown Edenton. Activi ties begin at 4 p.m. in the park with food, kid-friendly ac tivities and music. Fireworks will go off around dusk, about 9 p.m. A rain date for the fire works has been set for July 5. MONDAY, JULY 8 Neighborhood prayer The Edenton-Chowan Com munity Against Violence in vites the public to a monthly neighborhood prayer at 5:30 p.m. at the Edenton Farmers Market, 200 N. Broad St., Edenton. The group rotates the gatherings by police zones and invites all residents to join them as they pray for unity, peace and restoration throughout Edenton. Support group meeting The Alzheimer/Dementia Support Group for caregivers and family members meets at 1 p.m. at Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs St., Hertford. All are welcome. THURSDAY, JULY 11 CAC exhibit opens The Chowan Arts Council and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will host a reception for the exhibit, “Piecing for Peace of Mind: Quilts to fight mental illness,” at 5:30 p.m. in the CAC facil ity on West Water Street. The exhibit is funded through a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. TUESDAY, JULY 23 Blood drive Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church in Tyner will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 2-7 p.m. TUESDAY, JULY 30 Blood drive Rocky Hock Baptist Church will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 2-7 p.m. in the church multipur pose room. SATURDAY, SEPT. 28 Jollification Jollification, a historic home tour of downtown Hert ford, will be held from 12:30-5 p.m. The tour is sponsored by the Perquimans County Restoration Association to benefit the Newbold-White House. Tickets for the tour only are $25, while the tour with dinner (at the Newbold- White House) will cost $35. ONGOING PROGRAMS WEDNESDAYS Farmers Market The Edenton Farmers Mar ket is open from 3-6 p.m., rain or shine. Its vendors go out of their way to bring the community locally produced products twice a week. Stop by and purchase offerings such as vegetables, local eggs, dairy products, seafood, local meats, baked goods, fresh bread, soap and more. StoryTime for Toddlers The Shepard-Pruden Memo rial Library in downtown Eden ton has StoryTime for Tod dlers ages 3-5 at 11 a.m. ev ery Wednesday. Broad St. We are also open rain or shine thanks to our building design. The vendors are both inside and outside. The products we will have for sale each Satur day are as follows: local brown eggs, Ashe County Cheese, Bertie County peanuts, sunflower oil, fish, hot pepper powders, hand- made pens and original art work. Choir raises roof at Edenton church BY MARIDALE JACKSON For Chowan Herald The Tidewater Virginia Chapter of The James Cleveland Gospel Music Workshop of America sang a selection of gospel music in a concert benefit ing the Boys and Girls Club, Edenton Unit. The Saturday, June 22, event, sponsored by the Edenton Reconciliation Group and its own Sounds of Har mony choir, took place at the Edenton United Methodist Church. The powerful, rafter-raising music brought members of the audience to its feet to clap and sing along. After the concert, the Reconciliation Group hosted a potluck supper for the guest choir before it boarded vans for the trip back to Virginia Beach. The Gospel Music Work shop of America was cre ated in 1967 by Rev. The Edenton Reconcilia tion Group was formed nearly six years ago to build interracial friendships and understanding in the Eden ton-Chowan community. Its weekly meetings range from conversations both serious and funny, to films and speakers on a wide range of topics. The group’s Sounds of Harmony Choir is nearing its first birthday. Its goal is to bring the group’s message to the larger Edenton community with songs of joy, peace, love and fellowship. Both the Reconciliation Group and the Sounds of Harmony Choir are open to all.
