Pryce was slowed during the tail end of the NCHSAA Class 1A East Regional at John A Holmes May 10. Pryce was ready to com pete at the 1A state champi onship May 18. At the state cham ¬ pionship meet, Pryce along with Nakevin Hill, Zakeem Brooks and Ken treaz Coston won the boys’ 4x100 meter relay championship. The Aces posted a time of 42.14 seconds to edge out second place, and de fending state champion, Pender High School, which posted a time of 42.44 sec onds. After earning second place in the event last sea son, the Edenton 4x100 re lay team was able to win gold this spring. hr the boys’ 4x200 meter relay final, the Edenton group of Pryce, Brooks, Coston and Josiah Carter won the state champi onship with a time of 1:28.70 to defeat Pender’s 4x200 meter relay team that posted a time of 1:29.26. Edenton won the state championship in the 4x200 meter relay for the second consecutive season. Pryce said that it was a blessing to win gold with his teammates on the relays. He added that his teammates had talked about defending the 4x200 meter relay state champi onship title. Pryce noted that there was motivation to win in the 4x100 relay for Hill, who did not win a gold medal last year, but got sil ver. “I made a promise that I’m going to get him the 4x100,” Pryce said. Pryce, who lias roots in New York, acknowledged that it was special to end his high school career with state championships with his teammates. “Since I came to North Carolina, it has been me and them,” Pryce said. “It’s a blessing and something we can talk about when we get older.” In the boys’ 300-meter hurdles final, Pryce was in a tight race with Angelo Scionti of Andrews High School. Near the end of the race, Scionti fell to the track. Pryce finished the race to win gold. “I felt like stopping dur ing the race,” Pryce said. Pryce noted that way the race ended was shocking. Pryce went back to where Scionti fell and as sisted Scionti across the fin ishline. For John A. Holmes boys’ track and field coach Tamika Nixon, Pryce’s act of kindness wasn’t a sur prise. “That’s the kind of kid he is,” she said. Pryce is set to move on the college ranks as he will run for the Wingate Univer sity men’s track and field program. GOLF Continued from Bl He noted that it was pos itive that he has three more years to go to improve his game. Whitley said he began playing golf the summer of his fifth grade year. “I realized that it was something that I wanted to look in to; something more as a career than just a hobby,” he said. Whitley noted that his fa ther played golf growing up as well. His dad playing golf also influenced him to want to take up the sport. As for his favorite pro fessional golfer, Whitley is a fan of Jordan Spieth. “He’s definitely my fa vorite every since I started watching golf on TV,” he said. During Whitley’s sixth grade year, he played golf at Lawrence Academy in Merry Hill. Once he began attending school back in Chowan County at Chowan Middle School for his eighth grade year, he did not golf for the school. Whitley said that he would play on Saturdays during his eighth grade year on his own. During that time, he had a support system that would take him to the golf course to practice. Heading into this year’s regional tournament, Whit ley said that he was confi dent and excited. “I wasn’t very nervous because, at the time as a freshman, I had no ex pectations,” he said. “I didn’t think I had a chance to win.” During the round at the regional, Whitley realized that he was putting to gether a good round of golf. “It felt nice knowing as a freshman, I had seniors dy ing to catch me,” he said. He noted that he is hard on himself, but realized that he had three more years remaining to obtain winning a regional. Whitley was the only golfer from Edenton to secure a spot in the NCHSAA Class 1A state championship tournament the next week. He acknowledged that playing in regional and State championship tour naments were also about having fun. Whitley has worked on finding the balance of be ing a competitor, a perfec tionist and having fun on the course. “The first few holes at re- gionals, I wasn’t thinking about winning,” he said. “I wasn’t thinking about anything. I was having fun talking with the people I was playing with.” Whitley acknowledged the course at the state tour nament was a test and learning experience. “I really had to work for a placement,” he said. “I didn’t play my best golf, but I learned a lot.” Whitley is looking for ward to another opportu nity on the state champi onship stage. “It’s nice knowing I have three more years to work on everything,” he said.
