I Once more thanki '-n the past, I am 1 S1NCER1 I P v 9 .(.raid Political I I I I I The Optical Illusion? What? 1 Will A Car Roll Up Hill? (By William Murphy) (From The West Asheville News) Did you ever see a car coast up- t hill?well, 1 have. Nofooling, no t ;i?iding, but the honest sincere j ruth 1 and several o'her; actually \ a saw an automobile stop completely C at the bottom of a hill and with the } motor cut off, slowly start up hill P and gain speed as it reaches the top. 3 You will probably say, as others \ have said, "You're either crazy or F drunk, no car ever coasted up any C hill no matter how -light the grade.'* F You might think it was the car 1 happened to be using, but no, I've \ taken several cars to this certain 1 place and they all act the same I mysterious way. They all coast up the hill. F Now for another surprise. There s is not only one hill but two. One * of the hills is about 25 yards in ^ length and the other is of about 30 1 or 35 yards distance, and both pull B the automobile equally well. It I surely must be down hill but yet it I measures with a level and shows to ^ be uphill. It must be an optical il- J lusion but still if it were, the down [grade would have to be very, very I slight and hardly enough to cause > the auto t reach a speed of 5 miles 1 an hour or more?according to how a the car is greased?at such a short c distance. On the other hand if the a road were uphill why would the car c coast? It has completely baffled me and some of the others from the News office that I have taken to see this freak of Mother nature. Could you give the correct answer if you were to sec this feat in action? It must be an optical illusion for you know as well as I that no automobile on the market will roll up hill under its own power or entirely re- ? fuse to roll down one; yet your car will on this hill. For a good test let me recommend this one. Start from the top of the hill in reverse irem * and alter you have a fairly good start down the hill put your gears in i neutral and then hold tight and watch. Your car will stop and start back up the hill. No? Well try it. Haunts, well maybe, maybe not, but I if you find the correct answer 1 would surely be thankful to you who- ? ever you are if you would just stop 1 by the West Asheville News and give 2 me the correct solution. J These hills are locateir on the Ro- f bert Ingle and John Coleman farms * on the old Starnes Cove Road after * you leave the pavement. It is exactly l>. 1 of a mile from thfe the 1 West Asheville News office doors. ^ The other hill is about one-half of *1 a tenth of a mile from the first one c ?CHEROKEE Ii j i .v s 1 of expressing my sin- i rs of Cherokee County n the 1934 election and s influence once more on t n serving the people of A r ? k_a - egisrer or ueeas i nave give the people an hon- 1 ike administration m 1 r I id in this respect I feel scond term and if I have t ind in that event, it be- J voters of this county to 5 1 irery careful in my work 1 er time nor effort to do that neither myself nor hereafter be embarrass- 4 e in any way on account ?
