C. AIRPORT bOTES BY BOB HKATON THUMB-NAIL SKETCH If you are really Interested in learning to fly, you can secure all your flight ratings at our local air port. Witness the example of Richard "Ace" Parker of Andrews, who at present Is pilot for J. F. Shuler Construction Company. At 26, Richard, who served with the Navy in the last version of the World War, plus Korea, has held a student permit, student license, a commerical ticket with multi-en gine rating, and Is now annexing an instructor's license. All of these he has secured through the facilities offered by the Andrews-Murphy port since it opened a GI flight school early in 1947. Parker enrolled in the January, 1947 class and soloed shortly af Cub J-3. Since then he has flown Cub J-3. Since then he hts flown just about every light plane avai lable, ranging from Pipers to twin Cessnas, and has rolled up about 600 hours flying time. Aviation attracts men from all professions. Richard is no excep tion. After receiving his formal education at Andrews and Clayton, Georgia, he enrolled in barber school at Jacksonville, Florida. And a barber he has remained both in private life and in the Navy where he was Ship's Service Man, Third Class. He operates a three chair shop in Andrews. The advent of tne modern four place family type airplane just af ter World War 11 began a revolu tion in aviation circles. NEW FOUR-SEATER Fast, quiei, easy to fly, the new four-seaters are very economical, many of them averaging fifteen miles to the gallon of,gas. As a re mit thousands of small businesses and individuals havebeen able to own and operate them on a limited budget. For four-place owners who are learning to fly, there are no more tedious hours circling the airport area. Here again is a phase of the revolution. The owner simply car ries his instructor along cross country on his business trips, learn ing to fly and navigate at the same time. Right from the start the J. F. Shuler plane has been flown cross- country. Richard estimates that the Cessna 170 has covered 13,000 miles in the last two mon ths in nearly every southeastern state from West Virginia to Tex as. (During these trips his wife, the former Lucy Long, remains at home an "airport widow") To point out the real dollars-and cents value of the airplane, Parker cites the instance in which it was urgent that Shuler be in Altna, Tallahassee, and Savannah all on the same day. The time was mid-morning. The distance was 900 miles- But the trip was made, Business was transacted in all three cities, and they were beck la Andrews before dart an etapeed time of only eight hours.
